Hurricanes Take First Game Against UCLA, 3-1
Feb. 11, 2006
LOS ANGELES – Freshman Yonder Alonso drove in two runs and Carlos Gutierrez earned his third win of the season for the No. 16 Miami Hurricanes in a 3-1 win against UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium Friday night.
Alonso snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth with a two-out double down the right field line off Hector Ambriz to score Jon Jay for a 2-1 lead and hit a sacrifice fly to left in the eighth to bring in Blake Tekotte for an insurance run. The RBIs pushed Alonso’s team-leading total to 11 in six collegiate games.
Gutierrez gave up one run and four hits in a career-high five and two-third innings, striking out a career-high six batters. UM lefty Andrew Lane protected the Hurricanes’ lead with an inning of effective relief before Chris Perez came on to pitch the final two-and-third innings for his first save of the season. Ambriz was charged the loss, but gave up just four hits in six and one-third innings.
The Bruins jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first on a one-out single from Ambriz that scored Will Penniall from second base. Hurricane right fielder Tommy Giles evened the score at 1-1 in the second when he put a two-out, 2-0 pitch from Ambriz over the right field wall.
Miami and UCLA resume their series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. (PT).
Notes: Jay moved into 10th place on the UM all-time hit-by-pitch list with 19 in his career after being hit by two pitches, pushing him past Chris Hirsch (1988-90) and Lale Esquivale (1998-2000)… Gutierrez was the first Hurricane pitcher to hit three batters in a game since Brandon Camardese hit three batters against North Carolina State on June 8, 2003…
