Lincoln Super Regional (6/10-11): Finished the Super Regional 3-for-8 with a home run and one RBI … went 2-for-4 in the first game of the Super Regional … hit his only home run of the season in the fourth inning of the second game. Coral Gables Regional (6/3-5): Made several key defensive plays in left field … went 2-for-11 in Regional play … went 1-for-4 against Mississippi State (6/4) with an RBI and a stolen base … had a double in the Regional Championship with a run scored and a walk. ACC Tournament (5/25-26): Was a combined 1-for-8. At Clemson (5/19-21): Went 3-for-12 in the series with an RBI. At Virginia (5/13-15): Went 3-for-4 in the series opener. Vs. Jacksonville (5/6-8): Went 8-for-11 in the series with three doubles and four RBIs. Vs. Maryland (4/29-5/1): Hit .583 in the series with a pair of doubles and four runs scored. Vs. Florida State (4/22-24): Had his worst series of the year at the plate, going 0-for-12. At North Carolina (4/15-17): Tied a career high with five RBIs on 3-for-6 hitting with a double and a triple in the second game of the series … had two RBIs in the series opener … At Virginia Tech (4/8-10): Was 6-for-9 in the series with six runs scored … went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the series finale. Vs. Oral Roberts (3/31-4/3): Only played in one game due to injury, went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. Vs. Georgia Tech (3/25-3/27): Missed the series finale due to injury to his wrist … went 0-for-3 in the series with three walks and a run scored. At Wake Forest (3/18-20): Hit a single in each game and totaled three RBIs in the series. Vs. Rutgers (3/16): Went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Vs. Duke (3/11-13) Went 4-for-7 with five RBIs and five runs in the first two games of the series before going 0-for-4 in the series finale. Vs. N.C. State (3/4-6): Hit .500 in the series and went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the series finale. Vs. George Washington (2/25-27): Finished the series 7-for-13 and went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in the series finale. At Florida (2/18-20): Totaled seven RBIs in the series was 6-for-14 at the plate … tied the game three times in the series opener and eventually scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning … committed a rare error on a routine fly ball that allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the 11th … rebounded the next day in his first at bat, scorching a ball to center that was ruled a single, but allowed him to round the bases when the ball got past the center fielder. Vs. South Florida (2/11-13): Hit .500 in the series. Vs. High Point (2/4-6): Had a 17-game hitting streak dating back to the 2004 season end with an 0-for-3 night in the second game of the series … followed that with a 3-for-4 night … Vs. FIU (2/1): Went 2-for-3.
Freshman (2004)
Jay turned in one of the best freshman seasons in Miami history … his .368 batting average was the third best on the team … collected 14 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 56 RBI … his 56 RBI were second on the team … named Miami’s Rookie of the Year … named first-team freshman All-American by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball … named to the College World Series and Coral Gables Regional All-Tournament team … his two-out, walk-off grand slam to beat Long Beach State on May 28 will be long remembered as one of the greatest games in Miami baseball history … finished the season by hitting safely in Miami final 15 games dating back to a 3 for 4 performance against FAU, May 19 … recorded 28 multi-hit games in 2004 … has made 35 starts in the lead off spot while starting all 58 of his games in left field … has 19 stolen bases on the season, second on the team … collected his first hit as a Hurricane on Feb. 15 in a 2-for-5 effort vs. Florida … reached base 4-of-5 times on Feb. 22 vs. Tennessee, while collecting his first career extra base hit with two doubles … went 2 for 5 with a double vs. LaSalle on Feb. 28 in Homestead … collected three hits in a March 4 victory over Maine … had three hits including a double while collecting two RBI vs. Elon on March 7 … set a career mark with three stolen bases on March 13 … went 9 for 13 with five RBI, five runs scored, two doubles and four stolen bases over four games from March 7-13 … reached base five consecutive times vs. USF on March 17 going 4 for 4 with a double, three RBI, four runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base … hit first career home run on March 21 vs. Illinois-Chicago … doubled vs. Penn State on March 27 … reached base four times going 3 for 4 with three RBI vs. Penn State on March 28 … went 2 for 5 and scored a run vs. Georgia Tech on April 2 … had 2 hits and scored twice vs. Georgia Tech on April 3 … went 2 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored vs. Florida State on April 10 … had two hits including a double and an RBI … had three hits vs. Florida State on April 16 … went 2 for 4 with an RBI vs. Virginia on April 24 … had two hits, including a home run and three RBI vs. Coastal Carolina on May 2 … went 3 for 5 with two RBI, two doubles and three runs scored on May 8 against Jacksonville … added two more hits on May 9 versus the Dolphins with a RBI and two runs scored … went 11 for 17 over four games from May 19 to May 22 against Florida Atlantic and Ball State … went 4 for 5 with a career high four RBI on May 22 against Ball State … was 1 for 5 in the opener against Long Beach State and Jered Weaver on May 27 with an RBI … hit a two-out, walk-off grand slam over the left-field fence to complete a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Dirtbags on May 28 … collected two hits in four at bats on May 29 with two RBI to finish the regular season. 2004 NCAA Coral Gables Regional: Jay went 1 for 4 against St. Bonaventure with a stolen base … was 2 for 5 with a leadoff home run, four RBI and three runs scored against North Carolina State … singled, walked and scored a run against Florida Atlantic in the championship game … named to the All-Tournament team for his performance. 2004 NCAA Coral Gables Super Regional: Jay went 3 for 4 with a home run and two runs scored in an 8-7 UM win over Florida on June 12 … followed with a 1 for 4 day on June 13 to help the Hurricanes earn a spot in the CWS. 2004 College World Series: Jay earned a spot on the CWS All-Tournament team by going 6 for 14 with a home run, a triple, three runs scored and seven RBI … opened with a 2 for 4 game against LSU with two runs scored, two RBI and a triple on June 19 … went 1 for 5 against Cal State Fullerton on June 21 … led UM’s comeback against South Carolina that fell just short with a 3 for 5 performance that included a home run and five RBI … his line shot in the ninth inning into the right-center field gap hung up just long enough at the warning track to be hauled in by the USC center fielder and save two runs.
Christopher Columbus
Played center field for head coach Joe Webber at Christopher Columbus High School, helping them to a 26-7 record and the 6A Florida State Championship in 2003 … was a first-team 6A All-Dade County selection and a second-team all-state pick … selected to play in the FACA All-Start game in Sebring,Fla. Senior (2003): Jay batted .380 with three home runs and 23 RBI for Columbus … also stole 15 bases. Junior (2002): Batted .528 with two home runs and 38 RBI … had 10 doubles and posted a slugging percentage of .719 … also stole 12 bases … named second-team All-Dade County … team finished 31-6 and regional runner-up.
