Ten Hurricanes Score In 14-1 Win Against Wright State

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami set the tone early and rode the momentum of a four-run first inning to a 14-1 win against Wright State Saturday night at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes were hit a school-record seven times by Raider pitchers and 10 different `Canes scored to help No. 20 Miami win its fourth straight game and improve to 31-16 on the season.

Miami center fielder Jon Jay was hit by Jason Bennion in the seventh inning to break the school record of five hit batters, set on May 30, 1953 against Stetson. Dennis Raben was hit later in the inning to set the new mark at seven hit batters. The nine hit batters in the game tied for the fourth-most hit batsmen in a game in NCAA history.

Carlos Gutierrez improved to 9-5 and gave up just one hit in five innings of work with three walks and three strikeouts. Wright State starter Erich Schanz dropped to 3-3 on the season, giving up eight runs, six earned, on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts in the loss.

Roger Tomas and Danny Valencia had three hits apiece to lead a 16-hit attack for Miami. Valencia and Yonder Alonso both drove in three runs and Jay scored three times. Gus Menendez came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with two runs for Miami.

Miami set the tone early with a four-run first inning. All four runs came on homers from Tommy Giles and Alonso. Giles hit a one-out bomb to left-center on the first pitch he saw from Schanz to put Miami on the board. Alonso followed Jay’s double and a walk to Valencia with a three-run opposite-field home run.

Jay drove in Jemile Weeks with a sacrifice fly to left in the second inning for a 5-0 lead.

Weeks drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to score Eddy Rodriguez and end Schanz’s night in favor of Andrew Burns. Giles hit a sac fly to center to drive in Richard O’Brien Jr. from third for a 7-0 lead. Valencia singled to left to score Tomas for Miami’s eighth run. Weeks was thrown out at home on the play by Brian Shoup to end the inning.

Miami added four runs in the seventh to take a 12-0 lead. A walk, hit batter and wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Menendez, Giles and Jay to score. O’Brien hit a sac fly to left to drive in Dennis Raben for the final run in the inning.

Pat Masters drove in the Raiders’ only run of the night on a sac fly to left in the eighth inning off Marcelo Albir.

Valencia tacked on a two-run double in the eighth to complete the scoring.

The Hurricanes and Raiders conclude the series with a noon first pitch on Sunday at Mark Light Field.

NOTES: Jay moved into a tie with Bobby Hill (1997-99) for second on the all time hit-by-pitch list at UM with 32, and moved into a tie with Danny Figueroa (2003) for second place on the single-season hit-by-pitch list with 17 … Albir became the first Miami pitcher to have an at bat this season, striking out in the eighth inning.
