CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami Hurricanes starting pitcher Manny Miguelez needed just 97 pitches to throw a complete-game one-hitter in a 7-2 win against Indiana in front of 2,152 at Mark Light Field Saturday night.

Miguelez, who improved to 3-1 and lowered his earned run average to 1.76 on the season, had a career-high eight strikeouts. The complete-game one-hitter was the first for the Hurricanes since J.D. Cockroft’s gem against Florida International on May 31, 2003 in the Coral Gables Regionals.

His only trouble came in the first inning. Miguelez put runners on the corners with one out after hitting Indiana centerfielder Reggie Watson and giving up a single to Jay Brant. Watson scored on Zach Boswell’s grounder to second and Brant scored on Tad Reida’s grounder to Miguelez.

That was all the offense Miguelez would allow. He retired the next 13 batters he faced and breezed through the rest of the game. Miguelez ended the game by striking out Ben Greenspan, setting a career high for strikeouts in the process.

The Miami offense chipped away at the lead in the second. Tommy Giles, who went 2-for-4, singled to centerfield and Dennis Raben doubled him home to cut the Indiana lead to 2-1.

Walter Diaz, 2-for-4 in the game, hit an infield single to lead off the Miami third. Weeks reached on a fielding error by Indiana third baseman Steve Head. Weeks and Diaz advanced to second and third on that same play as Head was charged with an error on his throw to first. Yonder Alonso walked to load the bases for the Hurricanes. A sacrifice fly by Danny Valencia scored Diaz tying the game at 2-2. The scoring continued as Tommy Giles doubled bringing home Weeks and Alonso, giving the Hurricanes a 4-2 lead.

UM added three more runs in the fourth. Richard O’Brien and Diaz singled to start the inning. Weeks reached on a fielder’s choice, advancing O’Brien to third. Jon Jay’s single scored O’Brien and an Alonso double scored Weeks and Jay to give Miami a 7-2 lead.

Indiana starter Josh Lewis was charged with the loss, going four innings giving up eight hits and seven runs, four earned.

Miami will look to complete the series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
