At Miami
Was UM’s No. 2 starter for the almost the entire 2006 season … led the 2006 team with 78 strikeouts and went 8-4 with a 4.31 ERA in 104.1 innings on the mound … earned Miami’s first-ever ACC Tournament win against Wake Forest on May 25, 2006 … southpaw who should be a weekend starter … throws four pitches … hides the ball well in his delivery … made 13 appearances on the mound as a true freshman in the 2005 season, with two starts late in the regular season … earned his first collegiate win with three innings of scoreless relief against Maryland, earning him starts in the following two series against Jacksonville and Virginia … did not allow a run in his first four collegiate appearances … big lefty who is very deceptive on the mound and gives hitters a tough time making solid contact.
Sophomore (2006)
Went 8-4 with a 4.31 ERA and led the team with 78 strikeouts and 104.1 innings pitched … earned Miami’s first ACC Tournament win against Wake Forest on 5/25 … recorded Miami’s first complete-game one-hitter since J.D. Cockroft one-hit Florida Atlantic in the Coral Gables Regional on May 31, 2003, beating Indiana 7-2 on March 4 … named one of the Louisville Slugger’s Players of The Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper for his performance against the Hoosiers. Oxford Super Regional (6/12): Started game three and earned a no-decision after giving up five runs on three hits in 3.1 innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Lincoln Regional (6/3): Went 6.0 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks to earn the win against Manhattan. ACC Tournament (5/25): Earned Miami’s first-ever ACC Tournament win against Wake Forest … went 7.0 innings, his longest outing since April 1 to beat the Demon Deacons, giving up one run on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk. at Georgia Tech (5/20): Started and went 3.1, giving up five hits, four runs, thee earned runs in the no-decision, walked one and struck out one batter. vs. Wake Forest (5/13): Was touched-up for six run on four hits in 1.2 innings and gave up four walks in the no-decision. vs. Wright State (5/7): Gave up three hits and no runs in 5.0 innings to pick up the win … struck out four and walked one. at N.C. State (4/30): Pitched 2.0 innings of relief and gave up two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. vs. Virginia (4/22): Was chased after 2.2 innings, giving up a season-high eight runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in the loss. at Florida State (4/15): Had his worst outing of the season, giving up four earned runs on four hits and five walks in 2.1 innings … was charged with the loss. vs. North Carolina (4/8): Earned a no-decision in Miami’s only win of the series … had his shortest outing of the season, going 2.2 innings and giving up four runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout. vs. Clemson (4/1): Had the best outing of any Miami starter in the series … gave up five earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 7.0 innings in the loss. at Maryland (3/25): Pitched six-plus innings and gave up two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts … earned his third no-decision of the season. at Duke (3/18): Pitched 8.0 innings and threw a career-high 10 strikeouts with only one walk … gave up just three singles to earn his fifth win of the season. vs. Virginia Tech (3/11): Pitched 6.1 innings and gave up five hits and three earned runs in the win … walked a season-high five batters and struck out two. vs. Indiana (3/4): Fired a complete-game one-hitter against the Hoosiers, using just 97 pitches … recorded a career-high eight strikeouts, setting the record by fanning the last batter of the game … did not issue any walks … gave up a single in the first inning and one earned run. vs. Bethune-Cookman (2/25): Earned his second win of the season and gave up just one hit with five strikeouts and a season-high three walks and no runs allowed. vs. Florida (2/18): Posted career highs with seven strikeouts and 8.0 innings pitched, but was charged with the loss … only gave up one earned run in a 4-1 loss … gave up five hits and walked one … used less than 100 pitches to get through eight complete innings. at UCLA (2/11): Threw a career-high seven innings with three strikeouts and no walks … gave up eight hits and three runs, all off home runs, in the no-decision. vs. Winthrop (2/5): Started the first game of a doubleheader and went five innings, giving up seven hits and three earned runs with five strikouts and no walks in the no-decision … vs. FIU (1/29): Threw six solid scoreless innings as Miami’s Sunday starter, giving up five hits and striking out five with one walk for the win.
Freshman (2005)
Appeared in 13 games, including two starts … 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 22.0 innings pitched … also recorded one save … had 23 strikeouts with 16 walks … Only four of the 21 hits he gave up during the season went for extra bases … held opponents to a .250 average at the plate. At Clemson (5/19): Pitched 1.1 innings of relief, striking out three batters while allowing one hit and a walk. at Virginia (5/15): Was touched up for three runs in only 2.0 innings of work in his second start of the season … gave up six hits, struck out and walked one with a wild pitch and one hit batter … charged with the loss. Vs. Jacksonville (5/15): Struggled in the first start of his career, going 3.2 innings and giving up three runs, two earned, with a strikeout … gave up a home run and a double … earned a no-decision. Vs. Maryland (4/30): Had his best outing of the season to earn his first career victory … relieved Brandon Camardese in the third inning and went on to pitch three innings of scoreless relief … gave up four hits, walked two batters and had one strikeout. Vs. Florida State (4/24): Relieved starter Ricky Orta in the fifth inning and gave up a grand slam … was charged with allowing three runs on two hits with three strikeouts, a walk and one hit batter. At North Carolina (4/15, 17): Made appearances in the series opener and series finale … had a season-high four strikeouts in three innings of relief to record his first career save in the series opener … pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up one hit in the finale. At Virginia Tech (4/8): Pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up three runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Vs. Oral Roberts (4/1): Threw one inning of relief and gave up one run on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts. Vs. Georgia Tech (3/25): Pitched two innings of no-hit relief with one strikeout … Struck out in his only collegiate at bat. At Florida (2/20): Walked three batters and threw two wild pitches in two-thirds innings of relief but did not allow any runs. Vs. South Florida (2/13): Pitched an inning of no-hit relief with one strikeout. Vs. High Point (2/6): Made his collegiate debut … Walked one batter and struck out another in the ninth inning of a 10-1 win.
Coral Reef
Played for head coach Dave Bisceglia at Coral Reef High School … held numerous school records at Coral Reef … posted a school-record 10 wins during his junior and senior seasons … set school career strikeout record with 213 and record for complete games with 13. Senior (2004): managed a 4-4 record but posted an impressive 1.94 ERA while striking out 85 … pitched 65.1 innings … held opposing hitters to a .165 batting average … earned third-team All-Dade County honors … named a scholar athlete with a 5.1 grade point average. Junior (2003): Went 6-1 with a 1.92 ERA … earned two saves and held opposing hitters to a .176 batting average … set school record with 93 strikeouts … helped Coral Reef to its first winning season with a 16-13 record and district runner-up honors … named second-team All-Dade County … voted team MVP and best pitcher at Coral Reef. Sophomore (2002): recorded a 1-6 record and a 4.13 ERA with 35 strikeouts. Freshman (2001): Pitched one varsity inning … also pitched and played first base on the JV team. Other: Miguelez was considered one of the best left-handed pitching prospects in the state of Florida coming out of high school … helped lead the Florida Bombers to the 2004 Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, N.M.
Personal
Son of Manuel and Vilma Miguelez … has two siblings, Gabriel and Anabel … plans on majoring in psychology at UM … grandfather, Roberto Sanchez, won 10 consecutive national Judo championships in Cuba and was a member of the Cuban National Team, as well as his father … his aunt, Jany Miguelez, and uncle, John Miguelez, both graduated from medical school at Miami.
