ATLANTA, Ga. — The No. 21 Miami Hurricanes wrap up their regular season with a three-game set against the homestanding Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Russ Chandler Stadium beginning Thursday, May 17.
After their series with the Yellow Jackets (31-22, 10-16 ACC), the Hurricanes will travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament beginning May 23. Miami qualified for the tournament after clinching their series against Wake Forest at Alex Rodriguez Park on Sunday, earning a 6-3 win in their home finale.
Last Time Out…
The Hurricanes managed only three hits in the series finale against the Yellow Jackets, as Tech righthander Buck Farmer twirled an impressive eight innings while striking out nine batters in a 3-1 win. Farmer is expected to start Thursday night’s series opener at Russ Chandler.
Hurricanes righthander Eric Whaley matched Farmer with seven strong of his own, striking out a career-high 10 batters while allowing only two hits. Unfortunately, two runs allowed down the stretch by the bullpen was the difference-maker in a close loss.
You’re the Best Around…
The Hurricane coaching staff distributed their annual team awards on Tuesday in a game cancelled by lightning against Florida Gulf Coast University. Eric Erickson took home the Ron Fraser Award (best pitcher) and Bob Werner Award, given to the player who best exemplifi es the qualities of a winner. AJ Salcines earned team MVP honors, while Peter O’Brien took homerun champion and Arnold Novins Award, voted on by the fans. Garrett Kennedy was named Rookie of the Year.
Scouting the Competition: Georgia Tech…
Though their conference record sits at only 11-16, the Jackets are 31-22 on the year and have some impressive wins to their pedigree. Georgia Tech captured series with North Carolina (2-of-3),Virginia Tech (2-of-3) along with in-state rival Georgia (2-of-3). Their series win over the Bulldogs is the third-straight for the Yellow Jackets.
Tech has been led offensively by slugger Daniel Palka (11 homeruns, 43 RBI), Jake Davies (eight homeruns, 54 RBI) and Brandon Thomas (.366 average, 36 RBI).
On the hill, the Jackets have been hurt by injuries to some of their most talented arms. Unsurprisingly, Buck Farmer has put together another fantastic season in Atlanta (7-3 record, 96 strikeouts), while reliever Alex Cruz (1.67 ERA, .165 BAA) has anchored theYellow Jackets bullpen.
