Three Hurricanes Selected on Final Day of 2009 MLB Draft

Coral Gables, Fla. – – Junior right-handed pitcher John Housey, junior right-handed pitcher David Gutierrez and football player Glenn Cook were the final three University of Miami Hurricanes selected on the last day of the 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Thursday. The Seattle Mariners drafted Housey in the 36th round, while the Minnesota Twins took Gutierrez in the 37th round, and the Chicago Cubs drafted Cook in the 46th round.

Housey appeared in 10 games in 2009, including one starting effort, while collecting his first career save out of the bullpen to go along with a 9.33 ERA in 18 1/3 innings of work. Struckout 13 batters in his junior season. During his three-year career, Housey fanned a total of 48 batters through 76 1/3 innings of work in 35 appearances on the hill.
David Gutierrez

Younger brother of 2008 first-round pick Carlos Gutierrez (Minnesota Twins/27th overall), Gutierrez is 11-6 with a 4.33 ERA in 168 1/3 innings in his three-year career at Miami. After going 5-0 with a 4.75 ERA as a sophomore in 2008, Gutierrez became a full-time starter in 2009 and compiled a record of 4-6 with a 4.38 ERA in 72 innings of work this past season.
He was named to the 2009 NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team after tossing a complete game shutout of Jacksonville on May 31. The nine-inning outing was the longest of his career, with the Miami native scattering seven hits while striking out a career-high eight. It was the first complete game shutout by a UM pitcher since Cesar Carillo accomplished the feat back on March 31, 2005 against Oral Roberts. Gutierrez was also named ACC Pitcher of the Week early in the season after holding then-No. 12 Florida scoreless in seven innings of work in a 2-1 UM win in Gainesville.

Cook was a sixth-year senior for the Hurricanes football team this past season. One of three team captains, he received the Plumer Memorial Award (leadership, motivation, spirit) and Dale Melching Award (leadership) at the 2008 UM football awards’ banquet. Cook started all 13 games for the Hurricanes at middle linebacker and served as the quarterback of the defense. He led team with 91 tackles (56 solo, 35 assisted) and had eight tackles for loss, four quarterback hurries and two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown. He matched career-highs with 10 tackles at Texas A&M and against. Cook last played baseball as a junior at Monsignor Pace where he was a left-handed pitcher and an outfielder. He hit .300 with two home runs and 16 RBI.
