Hurricanes Defeat Alumni, 13-1, in Annual Game

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Sophomore shortstop Ryan Jackson and junior first baseman Yonder Alonso combined for six hits, six runs and three RBI to lead the Miami Hurricanes baseball team past its alumni, 13-1, in seven innings in the annual game at Mark Light Field Friday evening. Junior right fielder Dennis Raben finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored for UM.
Jackson finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Alonso went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and one RBI. Jonathan Weislow and Mark Sobolewski each had two hits for the Hurricanes, who recorded 14 hits in the game. Marcus Nettles, Danny Gil, Eddy Rodriguez and Will Vespe each had one hit for the alumni.
Seven pitchers combined to hold the alumni team to four hits and one run. The staff struck out seven batters. Freshman lefty Chris Hernandez and sophomore right hander Kyle Bellamy each recorded a pair of strikeouts in one inning of work each. Five current Hurricanes, redshirt junior Carlos Gutierrez, senior Enrique Garcia, sophomore Eric Erickson, junior Jason Santana and sophomore John Housey, each threw an inning for the UM Alumni team. Former `Cane Steffen Majer tossed a scoreless inning.
The Hurricanes took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Raben’s RBI walk with the bases loaded. Sobolewski’s RBI single scored Jackson giving the `Canes a 2-0 lead. Freshman designated hitter Iden Nazario’s sacrifice fly made it, 3-0.
UM used a five-run fourth inning to go ahead, 8-0. Jackson’s two-run single to right center gave the Hurricanes a 5-0 lead. He later scored on an error to make it, 6-0. Alonso followed with a run when he scored on a passed ball putting UM ahead, 7-0. Nazario’s RBI double made for the 8-0 lead.
The Alumni scored its run in the top of the sixth as Rodriguez led off with a double down the left field line. Vespe doubled him in to cut it to, 8-1. UM answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Gawenda had an RBI single and Adan Severino drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for a 10-1 UM lead.
UM tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Alonso ripped a double to left field to score Ryan Perry for an 11-1 lead. Raben’s two-run single made it, 13-1.
The Hurricanes will continue fall practice the next two weeks. UM will conclude its fall ball on Nov. 17. All UM baseball practices are open to the public.
