Jemile Weeks Named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American

June 9, 2006

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami freshman second baseman Jemile Weeks was named a 2006 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Magazine on Thursday. Weeks is the 22nd Hurricane to earn the honor and the first since Jon Jay and Danny Gil were named Freshman All-Americans in 2004.

The Lake Brantley High School product is currently hitting .346 with three home runs, 32 RBI and leads the team with 80 hits and eight triples, and is tied for the team lead with 17 doubles. His eight triples are the most by a Hurricane since the 1993 season (Kirk Dulom) and he tied a freshman record with a 16-game hitting streak this season. Weeks has also performed well on defense, leading the team with 154 assists at second base. He also tied a school record with nine assists against Duke earlier this season.

Weeks was named the Lincoln Regional’s Most Outstanding Player after hitting .583 with eight runs and four doubles last week.
