Miami Drops Second Game To Virginia, 15-7

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Miami fought back late but was unable to overcome an early 10-0 deficit to Virginia in a 15-7 loss in front of 2,602 Saturday night at Mark Light Field. The 19th-ranked Hurricanes dropped to 26-15 and 11-9 in ACC Coastal division, two games behind the No. 17 Cavaliers (34-9 overall, 13-7).
Miami starter Manny Miguelez (5-4) went 2.2 innings and gave up eight runs, six earned, on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Ricky Orta went 3.2 innings in relief and gave up two runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Virginia starter Jacob Thompson (8-1) gave up three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out four in 5.1 innings of work for the win. Pat McAnaney closed out the game, allowing only one run off one hit in the final two innings.
Second baseman Jemile Weeks went 3-for-5 with a single and two triples and drove in three runs. Jon Jay went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and three runs scored.
Left fielder Brandon Guyer went 3-for-5 with a single, a triple, and a home run and drove in three runs to lead Virginia. Beau Seabury and Tom Hagan added three hits apiece for the Cavaliers, who won their ninth in a row.
The Cavaliers took a 2-0 lead with two unearned runs in the second inning. Guyer tripled down the right field line. Tom Hagan followed with a hard hit ball back to Miguelez, but after holding the runner at third he threw the ball over first baseman Yonder Alonso’s head. Guyer scored and Hagan advanced to third base on the error. Hagan then scored on Patrick Wingfield’s ground out.
Virginia put seven runs on the board in the third inning, all with two outs, to take a 9-0 lead. Eleven batters came to the plate, combining for six hits. The Cavaliers scored on a three-run Guyer home run and a two-run double from Seabury to chase Miguelez. Orta spelled Miguelez one pitch into Greg Miclat’s at bat. Virginia added two more runs on a RBI single from Miclat and a Travis Henry double.
Sean Doolittle put the Cavaliers up 10-0 with a solo home run to left in the sixth inning.
The lead was cut to 10-3 in the sixth inning when the Hurricanes led off with three straight singles by Jon Jay, Weeks and Danny Valencia. Valencia’s single scored Jay for Miami’s first run of the game. Richard O’Brien was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Yonder Alonso. Alonso hit a soft grounder to first baseman Doolittle, who threw the ball into centerfield, allowing Weeks and Valencia to score before O’Brien was thrown out at third.
Miami scored three more runs to close the Cavalier lead to 10-6 in the seventh inning. Roger Tomas hit a leadoff single and Jay walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Weeks hit his sixth triple of the season to score Tomas and Jay. Weeks scored on Valencia’s sacrifice fly to close the gap to four.
The momentum shifted back into Virginia’s favor with a five-run eighth. Danny Gil took the mound and gave up all five runs, three of them earned off of one hit. Gil hit three batters, tying a school record for hit batsmen in an inning.
Miami and Virginia conclude the series with a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday at Mark Light Field.
Notes: With four hit batsmen in Saturday night’s game, the Miami pitching staff moved into 4th place in school history with 58 hit batsmen in a single season.
