CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Baseball team’s ninth-inning rally fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Winthrop on Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field. The 16th-ranked Hurricanes (3-2) lost their second game of the day and the series to Winthrop, who improved to 2-1.

Miami trailed 4-1 heading into the ninth inning against Winthrop freshman pitcher Alex Wilson. UM freshman designated hitter Jemile Weeks drew a one-out walk and advanced to second base uncontested with two outs. Junior Danny Valencia singled to move Weeks to third. Winthrop reliever Jonathan Settle was then brought in to face freshman Yonder Alonso. Valencia advanced to second uncontested to set up Alonso’s two-run single to put Miami within 4-3. Tommy Giles represented the winning run at the plate but was struck out on a called third strike to end the game.

Alonso went 2-for-4 on the day with the two RBI and Miami freshman leadoff man Blake Tekotte and Valencia also went 2-for-4 in the game. UM junior starter Danny Gil allowed two earned runs off six hits in four innings and was charged with the loss in his first career start.

Wilson went 8.2 innings in his first collegiate start, gave up two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts to pick up the win.

Chris Carrera led off the game with a double and was driven home on Matt Repec’s bloop single to left for a 1-0 Winthrop lead.

Miami answered in the bottom of the first. Weeks singled and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Wilson with one out. Jon Jay grounded out to first to score Weeks and tie the game at 1-1.

Repec doubled and Jacob Dempsey walked to leadoff the top half of the fourth, setting the table for Mike Konstanty’s two-run single, giving Winthrop a 3-1 lead.

The Eagles added one run in the top of the sixth off a Ben Ehrlich sacrifice fly that brought in Tommy Lentz in what turned out to be the winning run.

The Hurricanes return to action on Friday, Feb. 10 at UCLA. A 9 p.m. ET first pitch will start the three-game series with the Bruins.
