CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami head baseball coach Jim Morris had two answers to the question.
With more than 1,500 Division I wins to his name, two national championships, 1,000-plus wins at Miami and countless coaching awards, Morris was asked about his legacy after 25 breathtaking seasons in the first-base dugout at Mark Light Field.
“Number one, that we worked hard, we won, we went to the College World Series and won championships,” Morris said. “And two, that my guys graduated. I’m very big on academics. If you don’t go to class and study, then you don’t play for me.”
After five of his seniors took part in commencement ceremonies last week, Morris and his red-hot Hurricanes will look to continue their late-season push in the final regular season series for the skipper.
The Hurricanes (25-25) host the Boston College Eagles (17-30) from May 17-19, with the series finale – slated for 1 p.m. Saturday – marking Morris’ final regular season game as head coach.
Miami is riding the second-longest winning streak in Division I baseball into Thursday’s series opener with Boston College. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM.
UM was slated for a key late-season RPI matchup with No. 17 Stetson on May 15, but the game was cancelled due to lightning in the fifth inning. The Hatters were riding a nation-leading winning streak into the contest.
Still, Morris was optimistic Wednesday when speaking about his team as it heads into the postseason; the ACC Baseball Championship begins Tuesday, May 22 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
“We’ve won eight in a row, and if we win these three, we go into the ACC Tournament with 11 in a row, which is what you’d like,” Morris said. “We have to play good in the tournament.”
The Hurricanes will honor Morris throughout the weekend. On Thursday night, the first 2,500 fans will receive collectible souvenir cups. On Friday, the first 2,000 fans will receive adidas shirts commemorating Morris’ final season. And on Saturday, the first 1,300 fans will receive commemorative tickets recognizing Morris’ final regular season home game.
$3 general admission tickets are on sale for the skipper’s final game; they can be purchased HERE.
