CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Two of the nation’s longest active winning streak collide Tuesday when the Hurricanes host #17 Stetson in the final midweek game of 2018 for both teams. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Stetson boasts the nation’s longest active winning streak at 10 games, while the Hurricanes are tied for the second-longest active streak in Division I at eight games.
Miami’s winning streak – its longest of the season – has included back-to-back weekend sweeps, including a recent three-game road set at Virginia Tech from May 11-13.
Tuesday’s game marks the opener of a four-game homestand to close the regular season; Miami will host Boston College in an ACC series from May 17-19 before traveling to Durham, N.C., for the 2018 ACC Baseball Championship, which begins Tuesday, May 22.
Junior righthander Andrew Cabezas (6-4, 4.12 ERA) will make his second straight midweek start after winning his midweek debut last Wednesday vs. FGCU.
Cabezas, who had served as Miami’s No. 3 starter but was pushed to midweek when rain prematurely ended his outing vs. Bethune-Cookman on May 6, tossed seven strong innings last time out vs. the Eagles. Cabezas allowed just one hit and one unearned run with seven strikeouts to help Miami capture the season series with FGCU.
Cabezas will oppose Stetson lefthander Chris Gonzalez (0-0, 4.82 ERA) Tuesday.
While Cabezas and the rest of the pitching staff helped carry Miami in the first half of the season, the Hurricanes bats have impressed during the season’s final stretch.
Miami is batting .330 over its current winning streak and has posted a .893 OPS as a team over that stretch. Among Miami’s top hitters over the streak have been Danny Reyes (.429, nine RBI), Romy Gonzalez (.417, eight steals, nine RBI), Dylan Cloonan (.414, four doubles, eight RBI) and Raymond Gil (.387, 12 hits, .581 slugging).
Reyes (.533, eight hits) and Gil (.362, six hits) led the way in three games against Virginia Tech, and were joined by Gonzalez (.429, six runs), Freddy Zamora (.412, seven hits) and Tony Jenkins (eight runs, two home runs) in a successful weekend at English Field at Union Park.
Tuesday’s game is slated for broadcast on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM.
