CORAL GABLES, Fla. — One of the top pitchers in the ACC through the first half of the season will take the hill Wednesday for the Miami Hurricanes, who are looking to snap a four-game losing streak when they take on FAU.
Only two pitchers in the ACC have a lower ERA than Miami freshman Daniel Federman’s 1.51. Federman, who will get the ball in his fourth straight midweek start, has compiled a 1.42 ERA in his first three starts spanning 19.0 innings.
Federman and Miami are looking to salvage the season series with visiting FAU and starter Mark Nowatnick (1-2, 3.00 ERA), who have taken the first two games this year and who are coming off a three-game sweep of Marshall in Charleston W.V.
Federman (1-2) is not the only Hurricane to have impressed through the season’s first half; fellow freshman Willy Escala and Isaac Quinones find themselves atop the ACC stats leaderboard in batting average during conference play.
Riding a career-long eight-game hitting streak, Escala has the highest batting average of any player in the ACC in conference play at .439. Quinones, whose 14-game hitting streak was snapped last Wednesday at FGCU, is not far behind, in second place, at .432.
Senior Hunter Tackett ranks eighth in the category with a .368 average in ACC play.
Miami and North Carolina are the only teams to rank in the top four of the ACC in both hitting and pitching in conference play. The Hurricanes are batting .264 in ACC play (fourth) and the team’s collective ERA is 3.40 (third) during conference competition.
Miami should receive a boost from the recent returns of two key players; freshman Christopher McMahon made his official Miami debut in a Game 2 loss at Georgia Tech (March 31) while redshirt freshman Michael Amditis saw his first action since Feb. 28 after suffering a bone bruise at FAU.
McMahon, Miami’s top-ranked recruit in one of the nation’s top-ranked signing classes, also started the Hurricanes’ exhibition against the Miami Marlins on March 27. Amditis had a single in a 1-for-3 performance against the Yellow Jackets.
First pitch for the contest, slated for broadcast on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday from Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
