McKendry Selected ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — For the third time this season, sophomore righthander Evan McKendry earned conference honors for an outstanding performance on the mound.
McKendry was named ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week Monday after twirling seven shutout innings against No. 24 Virginia to help Miami clinch its series with the Cavaliers.
ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel. This is the third weekly league honor of McKendry’s career and fourth third time this season a Hurricane has been selected; junior outfielder Danny Reyes was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 19. McKendry was also named ACC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 26 and on March 12.
McKendry was dominant in his Game 2 start against the Cavaliers, recording a career high-tying 12 strikeouts and surrendering just three hits. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native, who improved his record to 4-2 by picking up a win for the fourth time in his last five starts, has a team-high 55 strikeouts across his six starts this year.
McKendry lowered his ERA to 2.04 in the 1-0 victory to clinch Miami’s fourth series victory of the spring and first over Virginia since 2009. The Hurricanes (12-11, 6-3 ACC), who are in tied for first place in the ACC Coastal Division, swept Virginia for the first time since 2008.
McKendry and the Hurricanes return to the diamond Tuesday with an exhibition against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park on Tuesday, March 27. First pitch for the game, slated for broadcast on WVUM 90.5 and 990 AM ESPN Deportes, is set for 3:05 p.m.
