CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The Miami Hurricanes will be looking for their third series win of the spring when they host Notre Dame in the first conference weekend beginning March 9 at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
Only one game was played in Miami’s last series with Notre Dame – a snow-shortened weekend in South Bend, Ind., from April 8-10, 2016.
The Hurricanes are 18-6 all-time against the Irish, including a 12-5 mark at The Light. Miami is 4-1 against Notre Dame since its longtime football rival joined the ACC for baseball.
Last time out, Miami lost, 5-3, in a midweek game at FIU.
“We weren’t aggressive enough with guys on second and third. We left some guys on base – we have to swing the bat. We took some called third strikes. That’s one thing. We have to do a better job on 0-2 [counts],” head coach Jim Morris said. “But our guys are battling. They’re battling hard, but they’re making some mistakes. Our young guys have to keep battling.”
A pair of those young standouts – freshman shortstop Freddy Zamora and freshman catcher Isaac Quinones – impressed once again Wednesday.
Zamora extended his streak of multi-hit performances to four straight games with a 2-for-3 night at the plate, while Quinones’ connected on an RBI double in the fifth to open the scoring for Miami.
“They’ve developed a lot offensively, no question,” Morris said. “Isaac has done a great job, I think, as a player…but all of our young guys have made some mistakes that you don’t see on paper or don’t see watching the game exactly. Bottom line is, they’re battling and they’re getting better.”
Senior lefthander Jeb Bargfeldt (1-1, 3.44 ERA) will oppose Notre Dame’s graduate student Scott Tully (1-0, 4.05 ERA) in the series opener Friday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra, 790 The Ticket and WVUM 90.5 FM.
