@CanesFutbol Captain's Corner: Oct. 5, 2016
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second year in a row, the captains of the University of Miami soccer team will be writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com throughout the season called Captain’s Corner.
Wednesday, in advance of the Hurricanes’ trip to play No. 15 North Carolina, Gianna Dal Pozzo provided this week’s entry. The senior midfielder/defender delves into Miami’s victory on Breast Cancer Awareness Day, the strong start to ACC play and more . . .
Hi, Canes Fans!
Sunday, we played Wake Forest. We wore pink for breast cancer awareness. Special shoutout to adidas for the awesome jerseys! Many of the girls on the team have people close to them who have been affected by it, so it was a special day.
We had an honorary captain from the Austen Everett Foundation join us for the game. Valentina was a cute young girl who had been diagnosed with cancer. However, she had a smile on her face the whole time. I was so glad we could have her there with us; I hope she enjoyed it as much as we did.
It was one of those brutally hot and humid afternoons in Miami. We scored just over four minutes into the game, which was the fastest so far this season. The final score ended up being 2-1; we got the win and another three points.
Only having one game this weekend was nice from a resting standpoint. We always make jokes that the seniors are old grandmas because we get sore more easily and take longer to recover compared to the younger girls. Two-game weekends really take a toll on your body, especially if you’re traveling.
We’ve had a great start to conference play and I’m really proud of the team. Even though we haven’t played our best for the full 90 minutes of every game, we’ve worked hard and played together like the family we are. Because of that, we’ve gotten the wins we need.
For the first time in program history we have won three consecutive ACC matches. My past years, we’ve struggled in ACC play so it’s refreshing the team is doing this well. It makes getting up early every morning to train much more enjoyable. But don’t worry, we aren’t done yet! We still have a lot to prove and I know the seniors want to make the ACC and NCAA Tournaments more than anything.
Last week, Phallon [Tullis-Joyce] and Gracie [Lachowecki] won ACC Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively. This week, Dejah [Cason] won ACC Offensive Player of the Week, as well. It’s great to see your teammates getting recognized for their individual accomplishments.
We travel to North Carolina today, so will hopefully avoid the hurricane and our flight won’t be cancelled. Stay safe everyone!
