Heyward Drafted by San Francisco Giants

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior outfielder Jacob Heyward was selected in the 18th round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the San Francisco Giants Saturday.

The selection of Heyward, who entered NCAA Super Regionals with six home runs and 37 RBI, marked the second straight year a Hurricane was picked by San Francisco.

Heyward, the No. 545 overall pick, joined teammates Zack Collins (first round, Chicago White Sox), Willie Abreu (sixth round, Colorado Rockies), Bryan Garcia (sixth round, Detroit Tigers), Brandon Lopez (10th round, Minnesota Twins) and Danny Garcia (15th round, Seattle Mariners) as Miami draftees through the first 18 rounds.

One of just four Hurricanes to start all 59 games entering NCAA Super Regionals, Heyward has compiled a .389 on-base percentage with 44 walks – the second-most on the team. The McDonough, Ga., native has hit six home runs – the third-most among all Hurricanes – and recorded 37 RBI.

Heyward, who was named to the 2015 College World Series All-Tournament Team, has batted .226 this season and connected for 10 doubles and scored 41 runs.

The 2016 MLB Draft continues Saturday with Rounds 11-40.
