@MiamiTrack Ready for Hurricane Alumni Meet

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program will host its final home meet of the 2014 outdoor season Saturday as it welcomes Canes from past and present at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational.

Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem is excited about Saturday’s meet, featuring talented athletes from across the country. The meet begins at 10 a.m. with the javelin, while running events are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay.

“This is the meet we really try to showcase,” Deem said. “For us this weekend, it’s doing a couple things to sharpen up for the ACC Championships. We can’t treat it like we would treat a normal track meet with ACCs five days away. It is a good track meet. we have some really quality teams coming in with Villanova and LSU and we’ll have quite a few open athletes. I look forward to it being a great evening for track and field.”

Beyond the track and field events, the 18 seniors on Miami’s track and field team will be recognized for their contributions to the program in an on-field senior day ceremony.

“This group has done so much for this program,” Deem said. “They have really been dedicated and committed and they’re really great students also. You look at Bassim and Lindsi and all the academic accolades that they’re receiving this year. I am very proud of them. It’s very exciting for them to take the next step in their future. Like with every senior class, it’s like you just met them as incoming freshmen and they’re now about to go out in the world. Its great and its sad at the same time. This has been a very fun group to work with. I hope they’ll stay in touch, and have a great last track meet at home, and get ready for ACCs.”

The Hurricane Alumni Invitational is open to the public. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and seniors. University of Miami students can enter for free with a valid CaneCard.
