#CANESCAMP NOTES
- #100Days Countdown to Kickoff: 24 days (Miami opens 2013 season Aug. 30 vs. FAU at 8 p.m. on ESPNU)
- Tuesday was the fourth of the NCAA-mandated 5-day acclamation before full pads are allowed.
- Tuesday was Miami’s second session in shoulder pads.
- Sophomore DB Deon Bush, freshman DB Corn Elder and junior DE Anthony Chickillo were in red non-contact jerseys.
- Freshman OL Sunny Odogwu spent his second straight day in a yellow limited-contact jersey.
- During stretching, the team listed to a Michael Irvin speech before the tones of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby” filled the air at the Greentree.
- The offense dominated early, winning 10-2 in first 11-on-11 drill, winning the WR vs DB drill and the red zone skeleton.
- Following the three straight losses, junior LB Denzel Perryman called the defense together and spoke about the importance of accountability. He emphasized, focus, communication and execution. Senior LB Jimmy Gaines also spoke about the keys to defensive success in the huddle
- The defense rallied to win the next 11-on-11 drill, despite senior QB Stephen Morris connecting with sophomore RB Duke Johnson on a wheel route for a TD and TD runs from running backs Dallas Crawford and Danny Dillard.
- The two units tied in the next 11-on-11 drill with senior DB AJ Highsmith recovering a Duke Johnson fumble.
- Johnson rebounded in the 2-minute drill, scoring a TD on the first play with a long run up the middle. But the defense won the 2-minute drill, with freshman LB Alex Figueroa picking up a tackle for loss to help seal the victory.
QUOTABLES
Al Golden on coaching players with more experience in the system…
“It doesn’t diminish the threat opponents pose to us, but it does allow you to focus on your job. As I’ve said, this has been the most enjoyable 8-10 weeks that I’ve had here.”
Micheal Barrow on challenging his players in preparation for the season…
“With all our linebackers, we make sure they know the defense. I always talk about the term ‘Let’s EAT’. Effort. Attitude. Technique. Just making sure those things are in order. Every time you step on the field, you’re giving 100 percent effort. Every time you got a positive attitude, you know your assignment and you’re working on your technique—working on your skill—because talent is never enough.”
Stephen Morris on most improved offensive area in camp…
“I like to increase the offensive opportunities we have on the field; Meaning, let’s increase our third down percentage, increase the chances we have to score in the red zone. I think understanding those situations and increasing our chances to play smarter on first and second down. I feel we’ve done a pretty good job with that so far.”
James Coley on team status through three days of #CanesCamp…
“What we’re doing now is we’re on day four. We’re trying to see where we’re at with consistency. That’s what we’re coaching right now, making sure they bring it every day. Okay, you have the talent. Now do you bring it every day? Over the course of the season, and it’s a long season, do you bring it every week? And that’s the key and that’s our standard.”
Tracy Howard on the biggest difference from last year’s camp…
“The biggest difference is the maturity level. I think guys knew what to do last year but it was more of a trust thing. I think we’re trusting the coaches more. Everybody is communicating more. We’re just becoming a better team. We’re bigger, stronger, faster. So I think that has a big part to play.”
