Former Cane Ryan Braun Earns NL MVP Award

New York, N.Y. – Milwaukee Brewers outfielder and former University of Miami Hurricanes baseball player Ryan Braun was named National League MVP on Tuesday in New York.
Braun received 20 of 32 first-place votes and 388 points in voting announced by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. In the process, he became the first Milwaukee Brewer to win an MVP award since Robin Yount in 1989.
Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp, who came close to winning the Triple Crown, received 10 first-place votes and finished with 332 points. Braun’s teammate Prince Fielder finished third with 229 points, and Arizona’s Justin Upton finished fourth with 214 points.
Nicknamed “The Hebrew Hammer”, Braun helped lead the Brewers to their first division title in nearly 30 years during the 2011 campaign. On the year, he collected a .332 batting average to go along with a NL-leading .597 slugging percentage. He also led the NL in slugging percentage in 2007 on his way to collecting the National League Rookie of the Year award.
During the course of the season, Braun powered out 33 home runs while posting 111 RBI and registering an on-base percentage of .397.
Braun has been voted to the MLB All-Star Game the past four years (2008-11) while winning the NL Outfielder Silver Slugger Award throughout that same four-year span.
