‘Canes Have Spirited Practice in Pads

Canes All-Access Videos: Golden | Shayon Green

Coral Gables, Fla.–The rain and overcast sky over Greentree Field did nothing to dilute the excitement of the first full pads practice of the spring. The Canes held a spirited two hour and fifteen minute practice today.

The first Hurricane on the field today was long snapper Chris Ivory, who was sporting an orange jersey.  The team first broke into individual positions to do some quick blocking and hitting drills before stretching.  Coach Art Kehoe’s voice resounded over the practice field from the start; he constantly demanded his linemen to work on their footwork and technique at all times.

During stretching many of the other coaches showed their emotion and excitement for the first day of full pads.  One of Coach Franklin’s favorite sayings, “you can’t play hard and live soft” was repeated throughout the stretching drills.  To increase the intensity of practice, Coach Golden began the day with 1-on-1 hitting with the defensive line and  linebackers against the offensive lineman.  The biggest hit of the drill came between Sean Spence and Malcolm Bunche.  After a wild reaction from their teammates, Coach Golden enthusiastically yelled that “spring ball has officially started!”

After brief individual position work, the offense and defense worked on inside run plays, while the receivers and defensive backs worked against each other.  Ray Ray Armstrong and Mike James had the first big collision of the day.  Former Hurricane great Willis McGahee was on hand motivating James and the other running backs during the inside running drills.

After more individual position drills and a brief water break, the Canes moved on to full team 11-on-11 practice.  While this day was dominated by the defense, Storm Johnson and Lamar Miller both impressed with 80-yard touchdown runs.  Receivers Kendal Thompkins, Aldarius Johnson and Tommy Streeter also made several big catches throughout practice.  Thompkins also ran for 20 yards on a reverse on the very first play of 11-on-11.

Several of the defensive lineman stood out today with a number of big sacks.  However, the biggest standout on defense was safety Vaughn Telemaque who had two impressive interceptions during full team work.  Former Cane star Lamar Thomas and head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier were also on hand watching today’s practice.
