Coral Gables, Fla. – Under the direction of Lauryn Williams in the University of Miami Athletics Department helping to promote community service, the Hurricanes baseball team performed four free clinics over the course of the last three weekends in and around the Miami-Dade area.
On Saturday, Jan. 15, members of the UMiami Hurricanes baseball team went to both Palmer Park (South Miami) and Suniland Park (Coral Gables) to perform free clinics for little league teams, while UM head baseball coach Jim Morris talked to the kids and the coaches of the little league teams about the fundamentals of baseball.
Nearly 300 kids and coaches showed up for the event at Suniland Park, while UM baseball student-athletes Stephen Perez, Nathan Melendres, Michael Broad and Zeke DeVoss were among those in attendance helping the kids with drills involving base running, fielding and hitting. UM Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt was also in attendance, and said the event was a tremendous success for UM and the continuing involvement in the community the Hurricanes are providing under his leadership.
On Saturday, Jan. 22, UM baseball student-athletes Chantz Mack and Dale Carey were among several ball players that attended the Kendall Boys and Girls Club of America to perform a free clinic for the little league teams of West Miami-Dade. Mack, a native of Homestead, Fla., played little league at the Kendall Boys and Girls Club while growing up, and was thrilled ay the opportunity to give back to his local youth league.
Finally, the baseball team visited Perrine (located between Miami and Homestead) for another free clinic held on Saturday, Jan. 29, capping off a three-week community service affair that provided kids with an unforgettable experience.
