Coral Gables, Fla. – Three runs in the top of the ninth inning allowed the Green Team to defeat Orange, 5-3, at Alex Rodriguez Park on Tuesday, giving Green its first-ever Orange & Green Fall World Series title. Green swept Orange, 3-0, in the best-of-five series.

After claiming a come-from-behind win in the 11th inning last Friday, Green provided late inning heroics once again to close out the series on Tuesday.

With Green leading 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, two hits and an error charged to the Green infield allowed Orange to take the 3-1 lead. Freshman infielder Scott Wiebel had an RBI in the inning for Orange.

Green tied things up in the top of the seventh as junior outfielder Nathan Melendres singled to right before eventually coming around to score two plays later after swiping second base. He was followed by sophomore infielder Stephen Perez who was plated moments later.

With the game tied heading into the ninth, Michael Broad – who was selected as today’s DiMare Tomatoes Player of the Game, came through with bases loaded and no outs, knocking a single to right field that plated what turned out to be the game-winning runs.

The two runs were all that was needed as senior pitcher Michael Rudman shut down the Orange Team in the ninth to earn the save. The win went to freshman Adam Sargent who pitched two innings out of the bullpen.

Starter Steven Ewing – the FMS Bonds Player of the Game a week ago – earned a no-decision in four-and-a-third innings on the hill for Green. Sophomore E.J. Encinosa picked up a no-decision as the starter for Orange.

For the champion Green Team, they were led on the day by Broad with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate, including the game-winning two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Melendres finished 3-for-5 at the dish with a run scored and a stolen base, while teammate Perez finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.

Orange was led by Wiebel with a 2-of-3 outing with the bat, recording a double in his first at-bat and the RBI single in the sixth frame.

Green finished with a line score of five runs on 13 hits and one error. Orange accounted for three runs on seven hits and committing one error.

In the series, Melendres finished as Green’s leading batter with a .444 average (4-for-9), and Broad went 6-of-14 with three RBI, two doubles, a triple and four runs.

Senior outfielder Chris Pelaez led the Orange squad with a .308 average at the plate.
