Green Beats Orange, 5-1 in First Game of Fall World Series
Nov. 2, 2010
Coral Gables, Fla. – Sophomore left-hander Steven Ewing threw seven innings and allowed just one hit for the Green Team, helping them to a 5-1 victory over Orange, in the first game of the Fourth Annual Orange and Green Fall World Series on Tues., Nov. 2, at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Green has never beaten Orange in what is now the Fourth Annual Orange and Green Fall World Series. Green took a giant leap towards erasing that fact after a dominating 5-1 win in game one. This year’s series is a best-of-five format, with all five games slated to be played, even if one team has earned the decision in the series.
Sophomore infielder Stephen Perez led-off the game with a double for Green, helping them put up two runs in the opening frame. Perez finished the day hitting 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Ewing was seemingly unsolvable on the mound for Green on his way to being named MVP of the first game following a dominating performance against hitters from the Orange squad such as Harold Martinez, Chris Pelaez and Zeke DeVoss. Ewing threw just over 70 pitches for the Green squad in seven innings on the hill, allowing just one hit and striking out five batters.
Through three-and-a-third innings, Ewing had a no-hitter going against the Orange; until junior infielder Harold Martinez placed a double to earn the team’s only hit on the Orlando native.
The Green team put up its final three runs of the game in the fifth inning with the help of freshman outfielder Chantz Mack, sophomore infielder Michael Broad and freshman infielder Brad Fieger all recording RBI. Broad and Fieger registered doubles in the inning, allowing Green to surge to a 5-0 advantage.
The Orange team got its lone run of the game in the eighth inning as Pelaez and DeVoss helped the three-time defending champions avoid the shutout.
The Green squad finished the contest with five runs on 11 hits and committing one error. Meanwhile, Orange was held in check with just one run on four hits and an error.
The series will continue at Alex Rodriguez Park with Game Two set for Fri., Nov. 5, at 3 p.m. The projected starters for both teams are Travis Miller (Jr., RHP) for Orange, while Bryan Radziewski (Fr., LHP) takes the hill for Green.
Admission to the entire series is free, and fans are encouraged to come out and support the `Canes.
Following this year’s series, the Hurricanes will close out their 2010 fall season with continued practice sessions and the end-of-fall Pro Scout day on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Alex Rodriguez Park. A time for the event has yet to be determined.
