Sept. 3, 2010

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Former University of Miami All-America first baseman Yonder Alonso was called up to the Cincinnati Reds active roster this week, making him the 11th former ‘Cane currently on a Major League Baseball Roster.

Alonso, who was hitting .296 with 12 homers and 56 RBI in 101 games with Triple-A Louisville, made his first appearance in a big league game on Sept. 1 and went 0-for-1 in a pinch-hitting appearance against Milwaukee.

Alonso played at UM from 2006-08, before the Reds drafted him with the seventh overall pick of the 2008 MLB Draft. The Coral Gables High product was one of the most productive hitters in school history, ranking third all-time at UM in career homers (52), RBI (215) and total bases (432). As a junior in 2008, Alonso hit .370 with 24 homers, 72 RBI and 80 runs scored in 64 games. His 24 homers that year were one shy of the school record of 25 set by Phil Lane in 1982.

Miami has over 30 former players currently on professional baseball rosters in the United States – including 16 at either the big league or Triple-A level. Other big leaguers from UM in addition to Alonso include perennial All-Star Ryan Braun, Aubrey Huff, Alex Cora, Pat Burrell, Chris Perez, Jason Michaels, Gaby Sanchez, Danny Valencia, Jon Jay and Scott Maine.
