Yasmani Grandal Awarded 2010 Rawlings Gold Glove
June 24, 2010
OMAHA, Neb. – University of Miami junior catcher Yasmani Grandal has been awarded a 2010 Rawlings Gold Glove, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Thursday. Grandal serves as the catcher on the nine-man Rawlings NCAA Division I Gold Glove Team.
This year marks the fourth season for the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, chosen by ABCA. Grandal is the first Hurricane to be honored since the award was first handed out to college players in 2007.
In addition to his offensive exploits in 2010, Grandal turned in one of the most successful defensive seasons in school history this past season, finishing the year with a .994 fielding percentage in 57 games behind the plate. He threw out 32 percent of attempted base stealers, committed three errors all season and just one error over Miami’s last 41 games.
Grandal’s Gold Glove Award comes just days after he was named a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy. He has also been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Johnny Bench Award. Last month, he was named the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and since has earned numerous All-America honors.
The Miami native continues to lead the ACC in batting average (.401), slugging percentage (.721) and on-base percentage (.527). On the year, Grandal had 89 hits, 24 doubles, 15 homers, 60 RBI, 57 walks, 56 runs scored and 160 total bases in 62 games.
He was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
