Miami to Play for a Spot in Sunday's ACC Championship Game
May 28, 2010
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 10th-ranked University of Miami baseball team has an opportunity to play in the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship game on Sunday if it is to beat top-seeded Virginia at noon on Saturday at NewBridge Bank Park.
Florida State’s 12-2 win over Boston College Friday afternoon eliminated the Eagles and the Cavaliers from tournament contention. A win over Virginia on Saturday would secure Miami (40-16) a spot in the title game as the winner of Division A, while a Virginia (46-11) win over UM would instead put the Seminoles in the championship game.
Right-hander David Gutierrez (5-1, 4.32 ERA) will take the mound for the Hurricanes on Saturday, while the Cavaliers are expected to counter with left-handed ace Danny Hultzen (8-1, 2.08).
UVa won two-of-three meetings with Miami in Coral Gables to close out the regular season last weekend. Gutierrez and Hultzen started against each other in the regular season finale, with the Cavs coming away with a 7-4 win. Hultzen allowed two runs in five innings to earn the win, while Gutierrez allowed four in five in a losing effort.
The other side of the ACC tournament is less clear, with Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and NC State still needing to play several more games on Friday and Saturday to determine the Division B winner.
Saturday’s game between the Hurricanes and Cavaliers can be seen live on FS Florida. It will also be carried on the radio by 560 WQAM, 1450 ESPN DEPORTES and 90.5 WVUM in South Florida as well as XM 190/SIRIUS 215 nationally.
Sunday’s title game will be held at 1 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park.
