CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Zeke DeVoss, Stephen Perez and Scott Lawson combined to go 7-for-11 with five RBI and Eric Whaley picked up his fourth win as No. 11 Miami rallied to defeat St. Thomas, 9-6, Tuesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park. Michael Broad went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run for the Hurricanes who homered four times in the game.
The win was Miami’s 30th of the season as the Hurricanes improved 30-11 overall. The victory also marked UM’s sixth straight in mid-week play.
DeVoss led the Hurricanes going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a home run that proved to be the game-winner. Lawson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI – including a three-run home run – while Perez finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Whaley (4-1) tossed four innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on nine hits. Travis Miller, Sam Robinson, Taylor Wulf and Iden Nazario combined to hold St. Thomas to two hits for the remaining five scoreless innings. Miller tossed two scoreless innings, while Robinson, Wulf and Nazario each pitched one inning. Nazario earned his first save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth.
Dane Stone suffered the loss in relief for St. Thomas, allowing three runs in two innings. STU starter Michael Arostegui allowed four runs in two innings while Danny Sanchez and Anthony Perez each tossed two innings to finish out the game for the Bobcats. Victor Madrazo, Ozzie Sanchez and Andrew Rodriguez all had two hits.
St. Thomas used five hits and a UM error in the top of the first to jump out to a 4-0 lead. The first seven St. Thomas batters reached base, including four singles and double from five of the first six guys to come to the plate for the Bobcats.
Miami got one run back in the bottom of the first to cut STU’s lead to 4-1. DeVoss singled to lead off the frame and quickly moved to third on a double by Perez. Lawson’s grounder to second then scored DeVoss for UM’s first run.
A pair of homers down the line in right put the `Canes up 6-4 after three. Back-to-back singles to lead off the third set up a three-run blast by Lawson to tie the game up at 4-4 before a two-run shot by Broad in the same spot down the line put UM up two.
A UM error and a double-play grounder plated a pair of runs for STU in the fourth, tying it back up at 6-6.
Miami’s third homer of the game – a solo shot to center by DeVoss – put the `Canes back up, 7-6, in the bottom of the fourth.
Ryan Perry made it 8-6 in the sixth with a solo shot to right-center before Lawson scored UM’s ninth run on a groundout in the seventh.
The Hurricanes will return to Alex Rodriguez Park on Wednesday for another mid-week game against an in-state foe when they play host to USF at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on CSS.
