March 9, 2009
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior closer Kyle Bellamy has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. The honor marks the second consecutive week a UM hurler was recognized after junior David Gutierrez was named ACC Pitcher of the Week last week.
Bellamy, a native of Davie, Fla., played a crucial role in two of Miami’s four wins on the week, picking up a win on Friday and a save on Sunday in UM’s series sweep over NC State. On the week, he held his opponents scoreless in three outings, allowing just three hits while striking out 12 in 5 1/3 relief innings.
In the series-opener against the Wolfpack, Bellamy tied career-highs for innings pitched (3.0) and strikeouts (6) as he tossed the final three innings in UM’s 12-inning, 7-6 win on Friday. He then converted his fourth save of the season in UM’s 9-7 win on Sunday, coming on in the eighth to get the Hurricanes out of a jam with a bases-loaded strikeout before fanning out two more in the ninth to secure the series sweep.
In mid-week play, Bellamy went one inning in relief against Mount St. Mary’s, striking out the only three batters he faced.
On the season, Bellamy (1-0) has converted all four of his save opportunities and had yet to allow an earned run in six appearances. In 8 2/3 innings thus far, Bellamy has struck out 18 and has allowed just five hits while holding his opponents to a .152 batting average against him.
Gutierrez was recognized last week after tossing seven shutout innings in a 2-1 win at No. 12 Florida on Feb. 28.
Boston College’s Tony Sanchez was named ACC Player of the Week.
The Hurricanes will return to action on Tuesday, March 10 when they play host to Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) at 6 p.m. at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
