Three Hurricanes Earn All-American Honors

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – Junior first baseman Yonder Alonso, freshman left-handed pitcher Chris Hernandez and junior second baseman Jemile Weeks have been named Louisville Slugger first team All-Americans announced by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Alonso, a first team All-ACC selection, led the ACC in home runs (21) and walks (65). He finished the regular season hitting .380 with a team-high 66 RBI while slugging .799. He became the first Hurricane to hit at least 20 home runs in a single season since Danny Matienzo in 2002. He also is a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.
Hernandez led the ACC going 10-0 during the regular season. He added a win in the ACC Tournament and is 11-0 with a 2.44 ERA going into the postseason. He hasn’t allowed a walk in his last four starts going into the postseason. He has posted the best record by a UM freshman since Jerry Brust went 10-0 in 1974. Hernandez was named the 2008 ACC Freshman of the Year as well as earned first team All-ACC honors.
Weeks also earned first team All-ACC honors. He has 31 extra-base hits on the season including 15 doubles, five triples and 11 home runs while ranking second in RBI (55). He also is 19-of-20 stolen base attempts. He became the all-time UM leader in career triples (18). Like Alonso, he is a semifinalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.
