ABOUT THE MIAMI HURRICANES
Miami (27-3, 12-1 ACC) split a pair of midweek games with Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Atlantic. The Hurricanes got a walk-off two-run home run from Dave DiNatale in the 11th inning to win 4-2 Tuesday night before FAU snapped the Hurricanes 14-game winning streak Wednesday night as the Owls won, 6-3. DiNatale’s homer was his third-game winning home run in the last seven games. UM’s 14-game winning streak was the longest since the 2006 team rattled off 16 in a row. Miami has lost just once in ACC play and is coming off a home sweep of Clemson last weekend. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Bellamy picked up two wins in relief while junior closer Carlos Gutierrez shut the door twice for his seventh and eighth saves of the season. Junior centerfielder Blake Tekotte had his 16-game hitting streak snapped against FAU. The Hurricanes bring a .336 team batting average into the weekend while the pitching staff has compiled a 3.55 team ERA.
Offensively, Preseason All-Americans Jemile Weeks (.387, 37 Runs, 41 Hits, 10 2B, 3 3B, 7 HR, 35 RBI) and Yonder Alonso (.362, 33 Runs, 34 Hits, 8 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 29 RBI) anchor the lineup, but center fielder Blake Tekotte (.361, 40 Runs, 39 Hits, 19 RBI, 14 SB), shortstop Ryan Jackson (.372, 26 Runs, 42 Hits, 2 HR, 26 RBI) and third baseman Mark Sobolewski (.348, 22 Runs, 40 Hits, 2 HR, 24 RBI) have all been swinging the bat well. Junior right fielder Dennis Raben has now played in 19 straight games and hasn’t missed a beat. Raben is hitting .293 with 22 RBI, 20 runs scored and 18 RBI while walking 19 times. 11 of his 17 hits have gone for extra bases – seven doubles and four home runs.
ABOUT THE GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS
Fresh off a 9-4 win over in-state rival No. 11 Georgia at home Wednesday night, 10th-ranked Georgia Tech comes into this weekend’s series with UM with a record of 26-7 overall, 20-2 at Russ Chandler Stadium and 9-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. This past weekend, the Yellow Jackets dropped two-of-three games to No. 3 North Carolina in Cary, N.C., falling 10-4 on Saturday and 8-1 on Sunday after taking the opener, 4-1, on Friday.
Freshman shortstop Derek Dietrich is one of the top young hitters in the league and he leads the Yellow Jackets in nearly every offensive category. A native of Parma, Ohio, Dietrich leads the team in doubles (11), home runs (10), RBI (33), total bases (82), slugging percentage (.695) and walks (17) in addition to ranking second in average (.347) and hits (41). Luke Murton leads the club with a .352 average (31-for-88), Charlie Blackmon leads the team with 42 hits and is tied with Jeff Rowland for a team-leading 12 stolen bases and GT’s corner infielders — Brad Feltes and Tony Plagman — have a combined 15 homers thus far.
Head coach Danny Hall has used just five different starting pitchers this season, with RHPs Zach Von Tersch, Eddie Burns, Deck McGuire, Brandon Cumpton and LHP David Duncan combining to go 19-4 this season. Von Tersch (4-1) leads all pitchers with an ERA of 2.29 and is slated to start Sunday against the Hurricanes. — Friday’s expected starter Duncan (4-1) leads the club with 43 strikeouts while Burns, who will likely take the mound Saturday, has a team-best 4.44 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
