Marlins Take Exhibition Game over No. 9 Hurricanes, 7-2

Coral Gables, Fla. – Sophomore shortstop Ryan Jackson delivered a 3-for-4 performance with three doubles, but the Florida Marlins scored four unanswered runs and held on for a 7-2 win over the No. 9 Miami Hurricanes Tuesday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium in their annual exhibition game. Mark Sobolewski and Jason Hagerty each had two hits for Miami.
The Hurricanes out-hit the Marlins, 10-8, but committed three errors. Miami used nine pitchers in the game. Redshirt junior pitcher Carlos Gutierrez struck out two of the four batters he faced. Sophomore righty John Housey was saddled with the loss allowing two earned runs in one inning of work.
Jai Miller’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth put the Marlins ahead, 7-2.
The Hurricanes pulled within 3-2 in the top of the fifth. Severino singled to left center and scored on Jackson’s RBI double to right center for UM’s first run. Hagerty then drove in Jackson drawing the `Canes within a run.
The Marlins put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Coghlan scored on an error after back-to-back singles to put the Marlins ahead, 4-2. Alejandro De Aza’s RBI single then scored Miller to make it, 5-2. Former UM alum Gaby Sanchez followed with a double down the left field line. Alexis Gomez’s sacrifice fly brought in De Aza pushing the Marlins ahead, 6-2.
Josh Willingham’s RBI single scored Dan Uggla, who walked to get on base, putting the Marlins ahead, 1-0. Mike Jacobs’ sacrifice fly scored Jeremy Hermida giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead.
Miami returns to its regular season schedule this weekend when the Hurricanes host the Florida Gators Friday at 7 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series.
