CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – University of Miami head baseball coach Jim Morris has announced the 2008 Hurricane baseball schedule, which features 36 home games at Mark Light Field, 20 games against teams that advanced to NCAA postseason and 12 nonconference games against teams from the state of Florida. Miami will play 40 of its 54 regular-season games in the state of Florida, as well as all of its Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament games.

“This will be another challenging schedule for us,” Morris said. “We play one of the toughest conference schedules in the country and welcome several tough games against instate competition. We have 36 home games, that our fans should be excited about as we get ready for another great season of Hurricane baseball. This schedule will prepare us for where we want to be come June.”

Miami is coming off a 37-24 season (17-13 Atlantic Coast Conference) that ended with a NCAA-record 35th-straight postseason appearance at the NCAA Columbia (Mo.) Regional. UM welcomes back seven position starters led by second team All-American first baseman Yonder Alonso. The Hurricanes also return two of its starting pitchers including freshman All-American and first team All-ACC selection LHP Eric Erickson.

Miami’s 2008 campaign will start much later, due to the NCAA’s new uniform start date. UM starts off with a 12-game homestand with an exhibition game with the Florida Marlins in Jupiter, Fla., sandwiched in between. The Hurricanes opens with a three-game series against Cincinnati (Feb. 22-24) before hosting the Florida Gators (Feb. 29-Mar. 2). Miami will play the Florida Marlins in Jupiter on Feb. 26.

Miami opens ACC play at home against Boston College (Mar. 7-9) and hosts Wake Forest (Mar. 21-23), Clemson (Apr. 4-6), Virginia (Apr. 25-27) and 2007 NCAA runner-up North Carolina (May 15-17) to close out the season.

Miami’s tough conference slate continues on the road as UM travels to NC State (Mar. 14-16), Duke (Mar. 28-30), Georgia Tech (Apr. 11-13), Florida State (Apr. 18-20) and Virginia Tech (May 9-11). Virginia, Wake Forest, Clemson, NC State and North Carolina all advanced to NCAA postseason play in 2007.

Nonconference opponents are scattered throughout Miami’s season. The Hurricanes play host to Lehigh (Mar. 4), Penn State (Mar. 11), Maine (Mar. 12), Cornell (Mar. 18), New Jersey’s Science and Technology University (NJIT) (Mar. 19) and Saint Mary’s (Calif.) (May 2-4). UM will host instate foes Bethune Cookman (Mar. 25-26), Florida Atlantic (Apr. 1, Apr. 9), Florida Gulf Coast (Apr. 8), FIU (Apr. 23) and North Florida (May 13). UM has nonconference road games at FIU (Apr. 2) and at FAU (Apr. 16).
