Hurricanes Win Series Finale over No. 1 Seminoles, 7-1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Freshman lefty Eric Erickson tossed six solid innings in registering his sixth win as Miami won the series finale over No. 1 Florida State, 7-1, Sunday afternoon in front of another sellout crowd of 3,000 at Mark Light Field. Dennis Raben went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Blake Tekotte, Jemile Weeks and Mark Sobolewski each had two hits for Miami (27-19, 12-12 ACC).

Sobolewski broke the Miami freshman hitting streak record as he hit safely in his 17th straight game breaking the 16-game hitting streak mark set by Jim Maler in 1977 and tied by Jemile Weeks in 2006.

Erickson (6-3) limited the Seminoles (39-7, 17-4 ACC) to one run on six hits and struck out three. David Gutierrez and Danny Gil combined to throw the final three scoreless innings. Roger Tomas, Yonder Alonso and Ryan Jackson each added one hit as UM out-hit the Seminoles, 12-8.

Danny Rosen took the loss for FSU as he gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out three. Tony Thomas Jr. led the Seminoles going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Florida State won the series with a 13-8 win Saturday night.

Miami jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Roger Tomas walked and moved to second on Yonder Alonso’s single. Raben delivered an RBI single to right field scoring Tomas.

The Hurricanes exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tekotte singled and Tomas hit a bunt single. Alonso reached on a fielder’s choice, but a throwing error by the pitcher allowed Tekotte to score and Tomas to advance to third base. Raben’s RBI single scored Tomas to make it, 3-1. Weeks’ infield single also resulted into an FSU throwing error which scored Alonso to make it, 4-1. Sobolewski then drove in Weeks for a 5-1 UM lead, before Gus Menendez’s sacrifice fly scored Raben giving Miami a 6-1 lead.

Buster Posey’s RBI single in the top of the sixth scored Thomas Jr., drawing FSU within, 6-1, with no outs and runners on first and second. Erickson was then able to get three straight fly balls to end the threat.

Miami took a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Alonso was hit by a pitch. Raben then sacrifice bunted him over to second. Weeks followed with a single to right field. Sobolewski then dropped in a base-hit to score Alonso giving the Hurricanes a 7-1 lead.

Miami returns to action this weekend when the Hurricanes host Wright State Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Mark Light Field.

Series Notes: Florida State won its first series over Miami since the 2003 season … Miami hit .316 in the Florida State series while the Seminoles hit .301 … Senior second baseman Roger Tomas hit .500 in the FSU series as he went 6-for-12 with four runs scored, one double and one RBI … Blake Tekotte and Mark Sobolewski each had five hits while Dennis Raben added four hits … Yonder Alonso had his fourth multiple home run game of the season in the series opener. He now has 14 on the season … Erickson won his sixth game for the Hurricanes. He had a streak of eight scoreless innings going until he allowed a run in the top of the sixth. He has given up one run in his last nine innings … Miami and Florida State scored 21 runs a piece while FSU held a 34-31 advantage in hits.
