Hurricanes’ Postseason Run Ends Sunday Against Troy, 9-6
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Despite building a four-run lead through five innings, the Miami Hurricanes baseball team surrendered seven unanswered runs as Troy rallied for a 9-6 win Friday afternoon. The Hurricanes finish the 2026 campaign 39-20 and 16-14 in conference play.
Troy’s Zach Crotchfelt (7-2) earned the win for Troy after tossing 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits while striking out one. Jake Dorn (5-2) was charged with the loss for Miami after surrendering two earned runs off two hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Hurricanes found themselves in a quick 2-0 hole after the third inning in Sunday’s elimination game after a Troy RBI single in the first off the bat of Steven Meier and solo home run from Josh Pyne in the third.
With one hit in the first third of the game, the Hurricanes stuck together, and put up a four run fourth-inning to take control. After Jake Ogden grounded out to begin the frame, Max Galvin was hit by a pitch to put a runner aboard. Alex Sosa then tied the game at two with a 423-foot two-run homer off the center field batter’s eye, his 18th long ball of the season.
Miami kept the pressure on Alonzo Alvarez followed with a single up the middle before Dylan Dubovik reached on a throwing error by the Troy second baseman Sean Darnell, allowing Alvarez to move to third. The trio of Miami freshmen continued to produce as Gabriel Milano capitalized moments later with a two-run single to right field, bringing home Dubovik and Alvarez to extend the Hurricanes’ advantage to 4-2.
After Ciscar retired the side in order, the Hurricanes went right back to work. After Brandon DeGoti grounded out to begin the frame, Ogden lined a single to center field, though he was later thrown out attempting to steal second base.
Galvin followed with a solo home run to right field, pushing the Hurricanes’ advantage to 5-2. Derek Williams then kept the inning alive with a single to center before stealing second after a pitching change from the Trojans. Alex Sosa delivered again moments later, ripping an RBI double down the right-field line to score Williams and give Miami a four-run cushion.
Troy answered Miami’s early offensive surge with a steady comeback over the middle innings, scoring seven unanswered runs from the fifth through the eighth to pull away for a 9-6 victory.
The Trojans first chipped into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth when an RBI fielder’s choice plated a run to make it 6-3. Troy continued to build momentum in the sixth with a three run frame as Jabe Boroff launched a solo home run before a wild pitch and sacrifice fly added two more runs, tying the game at six..
The game shifted completely in the seventh inning when Boroff struck again with another solo homer to tie take the lead, then Houston Markham delivered the go-ahead blow with a solo shot to right-center field, giving Troy a two run lead through seven.
Troy added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single from T.J. Meier, while the Trojan bullpen held Miami scoreless over the final four innings to secure the win.
