HURRICANES CONTINUE HOMESTAND WITH GEORGIA TECH
Miami (18-13, 5-7 ACC) continues its four-game homestand this weekend when the Hurricanes host Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division foe Georgia Tech (20-11). Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Mark Light Field. Seven of UM’s next eight games will be played at Mark Light Field. Miami will play at FIU next Wednesday, April 11. All three games will be televised with the games Friday and Sunday being carried by CSS. Saturday’s game is the ACC game of the week carried on the Regional Sports Network, which is FSN Florida locally. All three games will be carried by the Student Voice of UM, WVUM (90.5 FM), which can also be picked up online at www.wvum.org. The flagship of Miami athletics, WQAM (560 AM), will also broadcast the game on Saturday, while Spanish radio (WRHC 1550AM) is set to broadcast on Friday and Saturday.
ABOUT THE MIAMI HURRICANES
The Hurricanes walked away with a 10-9 win over cross-town foe Florida International Wednesday night in 10 innings thanks in part to a Ryan Jackson game-winning single and a two-run Mark Sobolewski home run capping a three-run 10th inning. Miami has won four of their last five games heading into a series with Georgia Tech. UM won its last Atlantic Coast Conference series taking two of three games at No. 11 Clemson last weekend. It was the first win over the Tigers by UM since joining the ACC. Miami’s 10-3 win Friday night snapped a 21-game ACC home winning streak by the Tigers. The UM series win was Clemson’s first series loss at home since 2005.
Sophomore first baseman Yonder Alonso led the Hurricanes going 3-for-4 with three RBI against FIU. Alonso is hitting .429 in the last five games with eight hits, five runs scored, two home runs and 10 RBI. Senior infielder Roger Tomas has kept up with Alonso as he has seven hits in 19 plate appearances to hit .368. Tomas has four runs scored, two doubles and three RBI. On the season, Miami has a 4.02 team ERA, which is seventh in the ACC. UM will send its steady rotation of freshman LHP Eric Erickson, LHP Scott Maine and RHP Enrique Garcia to the mound this weekend. The three have pitched well in ACC play. Erickson is 2-2 with a 1.80 ERA to go along with 20 strikeouts in 25 innings. Garcia is 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA. Maine has nine earned runs in 20 2/3 innings with a 3.92 ERA.Miami has had at least 10 hits in three of its last four games while racking up 44 total hits in those games. UM had the third-most hits in a game this season against FIU on Wednesday.
ABOUT THE GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS
Georgia Tech (20-11, 8-4 ACC) brings a seven-game winning streak to town and the Yellow Jackets have won 11 of their last 13 games. The Yellow Jackets have only lost one ACC series (Virginia Tech at home) in 2007. Tech begins a six-game ACC road swing as it heads to Coral Gables this weekend before heading to No. 3 Virginia next weekend. Georgia Tech won 11-8 at home against Wofford Tuesday night. Tech swept Maryland last weekend in ACC play outscoring the Terrapins, 25-12. Center fielder Danny Payne ranks fourth in the ACC in individual batting hitting at .409 in 31 games. Payne has 47 hits including 13 doubles, three triples and two home runs from his leadoff spot. Catcher Matt Wieters has six home runs and a team-high 33 RBI. Five of Tech’s starters have at least 20 RBI. The Yellow Jackets have 28 home runs as a team which is the third-most in the ACC. LHP David Duncan will start Friday’s game followed by junior right-hander John Goodman on Saturday. Lefty Ryan Turner rounds out the rotation.
THE UM-GEORGIA TECH SERIES
The Hurricanes lead the all-time series, 38-21. Georgia Tech has won six of the last seven meetings including four wins last season. Tech won the three-game series in Atlanta and racked up two more wins over UM in the ACC Tournament. Three of the last six have been decided by one run.
