Hurricanes Fall at No. 5 Virginia, 4-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Virginia’s Jacob Thompson struck out a career-high 10 batters to lead the No. 5 Cavaliers past Miami, 4-1, in the first game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Davenport Field Friday night in front of 2,077 fans. Blake Tekotte went 2-for-4 and scored the Hurricanes’ (14-11, 2-5 ACC) lone run while Mark Sobolewski was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Eric Erickson (3-3) struck out five in five innings and allowed one earned run. John Housey pitched the final three innings in relief and limited Virginia (21-4, 4-3 ACC) to two runs on four hits.
Virginia’s Casey Lambert pitched the final inning and struck out three for his fifth save of the season. Greg Miclat, David Adams and Brandon Guyer each went 2-for-4 for Virginia.
Virginia capitalized on two Miami errors in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Patrick Wingfield reached on an error and stole second. He then stole third and scored on a throwing error by Erickson at second.
David Adams drove in Greg Miclat who doubled and stole third to lead off the bottom of the third giving UVa a 2-0 lead.
The Hurricanes pulled within 2-1 in the top of the sixth. Tekotte laid down a bunt single. After Yonder Alonso walked, Sobolewski singled to right center to score Tekottte to make it a one-run game.
Virginia added a run in the bottom of the sixth on Patrick Wingfield’s sacrifice fly scoring Brandon Guyer as UVa went ahead 3-1.
The Cavaliers made it 4-1 in the bottom of the eighth on Beau Seabury’s sacrifice fly which scored David Adams.
The Hurricanes and Cavaliers continue their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. LHP Scott Maine will face Virginia lefty Matt Packer.
