No. 23 Miami Rallies to Defeat Maryland, 4-3

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Freshman third baseman Mark Sobolewski walked with the bases loaded to score Jemile Weeks in the bottom of the ninth as No. 23 Miami rallied with four runs in the last three innings to defeat Maryland, 4-3, Saturday night in front of 2,240 fans at Mark Light Field on St. Patrick’s Day in the second game of the Atlantic Coast Conference series. Ryan Jackson, Jason Hagerty and Weeks each had two hits for the Hurricanes (14-9, 2-3 ACC), who won their fourth straight game.
Alex Koronis (3-0) won his third game for UM in relief as he one-hit the Terrapins (12-7, 2-3 ACC) in the final 1 2/3 innings. Miami starter Scott Maine pitched six strong innings and held Maryland to three runs, two earned, on five hits and struck out five. David Gutierrez two-hit Maryland through 1 1/3 innings.
Maryland starter Ryan Moorer held Miami to two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings before giving way to relief pitchers Brett Tidball and Brett Cecil. Cecil (2-2) suffered the loss in relief as he walked three batters in 1 2/3 innings allowing two unearned runs.
A.J Casario led Maryland going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Miami’s Kevin Diego led off with a double off the right field wall. After Weeks walked, Roger Tomas walked loading the bases. Yonder Alonso then lined a 1-2 pitch that Gerry Spessard dropped at first base. Alonso reached on the error and Diego scored tying the game, 3-3. Cecil walked Sobolewski in four pitches allowing Weeks to score the game-winner.
Miami bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh after trailing 3-0. Jackson doubled down the left line and moved to third on Blake Tekotte’s ground out. Diego grounded out to score Jackson pulling Miami within, 3-1. Hagerty started a two-out rally with a single to left field. Weeks followed with a single through the right side. Tomas then drove in Hagerty making it, 3-2.
Maryland took advantage of a passed ball in the top of the second to go ahead, 1-0. Wink Nolan reached on an infield single, moved to second on a ground out and third on a wild pitch. He scored on the passed ball putting the Terrapins ahead early.
Casario’s two-run single in the top of the fifth gave the Terrapins a 3-0 lead.
Miami and Maryland wrap up their series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Mark Light Field. RHP Enrique Garcia (1-1, 3.38 ERA) will face Maryland RHP Kevin Biringer (1-3, 5.30 ERA).
Game Notes: Miami wore s special St. Patrick’s Day hat and improved to 23-10 on March 17 all-time … Ryan Jackson picked up two more hits in the series. He now has six hits this weekend … Freshman catcher Jason Hagerty had his second straight two-hit game for the Hurricanes.
