CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The 2007 Miami baseball team gathered for the first time at Mark Light Field on Wednesday afternoon, following the first day of classes at the University of Miami.

Twenty-one Hurricanes return from the 2006 team that went 42-24 and took one of the most impressive roads to the CWS in school history. Fourteen of those returners were on the final CWS roster, including first baseman Yonder Alonso, second baseman Jemile Weeks, shortstop Roger Tomas, third baseman Gus Menendez, catcher Richard O’Brien, and outfielders Blake Tekotte and Dennis Raben.

Miami’s returning pitchers included 2006 ace Scott Maine, who passed on signing with the Colorado Rockies over the summer, senior right-hander Danny Gil, southpaw starter Manny Miguelez and Jason Santana.

The veterans will be joined by an incoming class that includes five transfers and 11 freshmen.

“I’m very excited about our players returning,” head coach Jim Morris said. “With the talent that we have in this incoming class, we have a chance to have an outstanding year.”

UM’s freshman class is expected to be ranked among the nation’s best and includes; right-handed pitcher Kyle Bellamy (Davie/Cypress Bay HS), outfielder Kevin Diego (Miami/Christopher Columbus HS), left-handed pitcher Eric Erickson (Sarasota/Sarasota HS), catcher Jason Hagerty (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney HS), right-handed pitcher John Housey (Davie/Nova HS), shortstop Ryan Jackson (Miami Springs/Florida Christian HS), right-handed pitcher Alex Koronis (Miami/Monsignor Pace HS), right-handed pitcher Anthony Nalepa (Miami/Chaminade-Madonna Prep), right-handed pitcher Michael Rudman (Miami/Killian HS), third baseman Mark Sobolewski (Sarasota/Sarasota HS) and right-handed pitcher Kyle Snyder (Wellington/Wellington HS).

Transfers joining UM for fall practice include sophomore outfielder Dave DiNatale (Parkland/Central Florida), junior right-handed pitcher Enriques Garcia (Mechanicsville, Md./Potomac State JC), junior left-handed pitcher P.J. Fisher (Las Vegas, Nev./Miami Dade CC), junior right-handed Christopher Borgognoni (Miami/Marshall).

The team will begin individual workouts next week and will conduct fall practice November 2-18.
