Miami's Eddy Rodriguez and Jon Jay Earn All-ACC First Team Honors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Miami juniors, catcher Eddy Rodriguez and centerfielder Jon Jay were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team at the ACC Baseball Tournament Banquet at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Monday night. Freshman second baseman Jemile Weeks and junior reliever Chris Perez were named to the All-ACC Second Team.

Rodriguez, a semi-finalist for the Johnny Bench Award, led the team in hitting during the regular season with a .344 average and tied for the team lead with eight home runs. He also led the Hurricanes with a .367 average in ACC play and a .991 fielding percentage behind the plate. Jay, a second-team selection in 2005, hit .343 for the season and led the Hurricanes with career highs in runs (64), hit by pitch (20), walks (33), stolen bases (26) and total sacrifices (13).

Weeks is the first Miami freshman to earn All-ACC recognition during the program’s two-year history in the conference. He led the team and conference with eight triples during the regular season, the most by a Hurricane since the 1993 season. The switch-hitter led the team in at bats with 206 and hit .325 with 12 doubles, eight triples, three home runs and 27 RBI and 52 runs.

Perez, a semi-finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, given to the nation’s top relief pitcher, led the Hurricanes with 11 saves and a 1.87 ERA. He went 3-1 during the regular season with 54 strikeouts in 43.1 innings on the mound.

Virginia pitcher/first baseman Sean Doolittle was named the ACC Player of the Year, while North Carolina’s Andrew Miller was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year. Wake Forest first baseman Allan Dykstra was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and Clemson’s Jack Leggett was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the third time.

Miami opens play in the ACC Tournament as the No. 5 seed on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against No. 4 seed Georgia Tech at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
