Miami Swept By Clemson In 14-1 Loss

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – The University of Miami Hurricanes lost to the Clemson Tigers, 14-1, in front of 1,927 at Mark Light Field on Sunday. The Hurricanes dropped to 23-10 overall and 8-4 in the ACC following the three-game sweep, while Clemson improved to 20-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play.

Hurricanes starter Scott Maine (5-1) went 1/3 of an inning giving up seven runs on five hits and hit two batters in the loss. Ricky Orta came in and pitched 4.1 innings of relief, giving up seven runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Tigers starting pitcher Stephen Faris (3-0) threw six innings and gave up one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts for the win.

Clemson scored eight runs in the first inning and out-hit the Miami fifteen to six. The Tiger pitching staff held Miami without an earned run for the second straight game.

Blake Tekotte led Miami going 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Tigers catcher Adrian Casanova went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run. Casanova had four RBI and scored two runs.

Clemson jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first inning when. Twelve Tigers came to the plate and six different batters drove in runs in the inning. Casanova led the way during the inning with a three-run home run that scored Travis Storrer and Stan Widmann.

The Hurricanes scored their only run of the game in the third inning to close the lead to 8-1. Tekotte and Jon Jay reached on a pair of singles. Miami had the double steal on when Yonder Alonso struck out swinging for the second out of the inning. Casanova’s throw down to third sailed into left field allowing Tekotte to score and Jay to reach third.

The Tigers took its lead back up to eight runs in the fourth. Tyler Colvin singled, stole second and scored on Andy D’Alessio’s double.

Clemson scored five runs in the fifth inning on five hits to go up 14-1.

Miami opens a three-game series Friday night, April 7 against North Carolina at the Light.

GAME NOTES: When Jon Jay was hit by a pitch in the first inning, he moved into tie for third place on the all-time HBP list with 27, tying him with Jim Burt and Luis Hernandez.
