CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – A 33-play scrimmage highlighted action for the Miami Hurricanes football team as preseason two-a-days continued Wednesday at the Greentree Practice Fields on the UM campus. Wednesday was the team’s first in full pads in both sessions. The scrimmage came in the final 45 minutes of the afternoon’s 90-minute practice that took place under sunny skies.

“Well, the intensity level was up today as you would expect with a scrimmage, so that was good,” said head coach Larry Coker after the afternoon practice. “I was pleased with our offense. Obviously, the running backs played awfully well. They ran the ball well and they didn’t give the ball over. But our defense didn’t force any turnovers, either. This time of year you’d rather see the offense get stuffed all three times.”

The limited scrimmage featured 12 plays from scrimmage by the starting unit, followed by 12 more by the second-team units and a dozen more matching the remainder of the squad.

Quarterback Ken Dorsey started off the scrimmage by leading a crisp scoring drive that ended with a 55-yard touchdown strike to receiver Roscoe Parrish. Parrish, on the field in a three-receiver set, darted down the middle of the field before catching the pass and racing the final 20 yards untouched. Dorsey’s final totals were three completions in six attempts for 69 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Parrish’s catch was his only reception of the day.

Defensively, reserve middle linebacker Leon Williams led the way with five tackles while starting middle linebacker Jon Vilma had four stops. Tackle William Joseph registered a sack of Dorsey while true freshman tackle Baraka Atkins also garnered a sack.

Starting tailback Willis McGahee rushed five times for 24 yards, including a long of 13 yards. Second-team tailback Jason Geathers led all rushers with 31 yards on six carries and scored a touchdown on the ground, in addition to a nine-yard reception. Reserve back Quadtrine Hill, who started at fullback, rushed for 21 yards on just three carries while also seeing some time at tailback. Hill’s 14-yard run was the longest of the day.

Backup quarterback Derrick Crudup completed both of his pass attempts for 28 yards, including a 19-yarder to tight end David Williams. True freshman quarterback Marc Guillon was three-for-three passing for 36 yards and a touchdown, a 31-yard toss to receiver Nate Smith who made a leaping catch to set up a touchdown. Guillon later hit tight end Brandon Sebald for a one-yard touchdown as Sebald made the catch near the back of the end zone.

Miami has two practices slated for Thursday, the morning session at 8:30 a.m. and the afternoon workout scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The team’s next scrimmage is slated for the morning practice on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Greentree. That scrimmage will be closed to the public, as will all remaining Hurricanes practices this season.

Practices are open to the public through Friday, August 16. All workouts are closed to the public beginning Saturday, August 17, with regular media policies (viewing for only the first 30 minutes and final 15 minutes of practice) going into effect at that time.

The Hurricanes begin the 2002 season Saturday, August 31, versus Florida A&M at the Orange Bowl. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
