Strong Rushing Game, Potent Passing Attack Highlights Of Morning Scrimmage

Aug. 17, 2002

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Tailback Willis McGahee rushed for 105 yards on 10 carries to spearhead an explosive performance by the Hurricane offense in the University of Miami’s second scrimmage of fall football practice Saturday morning at the Greentree Practice Field on the UM campus.

“We extended them pretty good today,” said head coach Larry Coker. “This was a good scrimmage for us and there will be some great video to look at today. We’re not ready to beat anybody today. We’re not a very good football team right now. I think we can be and I think we will be a good football team, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. We’ve got to get into better condition and we’ve got to be more efficient.”

McGahee broke for 40 yards around right end on the first play of the scrimmage to set the tone for a day in which the offense amassed 351 yards on 68 plays (5.2 yards per play). Miami running backs gained 185 yards on 36 attempts (5.1 avg.) while UM quarterbacks completed 12-of-32 attempts for 166 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Starting quarterback Ken Dorsey completed 4-of-14 attempts for 84 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Dorsey started the scrimmage sizzling, completing a 23-yard scoring pass to receiver Roscoe Parrish to cap the first possession. Dorsey completed his first three passes before the Miami secondary regrouped and responded with some stellar play after a shaky start. Reserve quarterback Derrick Crudup completed 5-of-13 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown with one interception.

Parrish led all receivers with 42 yards on three catches. Kevin Beard also caught a 34-yard scoring strike and Akieem Jolla added a 19-yard touchdown reception. Tight end Kellen Winslow had a 30-yard grab as nine different players caught passes.

In addition to McGahee’s running exploits, second-team tailback Jason Geathers motored for 42 yards on 10 carries and fullback Quadtrine Hill gained 18 yards on just three attempts (6.0 avg.). The play of the offensive line was one of the highlights of the day, particularly the starting unit.

Placekicker Todd Sievers converted both field goal attempts, nailing a 50-yarder and a 37-yarder. Backup Mark Gent also was successful on a 47-yard attempt.

Coker was concerned with some sloppy play, but was pleased with the overall intensity of the morning practice.

“We had too many dropped passes, we had too many penalties, the defense gave up some big plays … the standouts from the scrimmage, all three running backs were very, very good. I was very impressed with Willis (McGahee) and with (Jason) Geathers and with Quadtrine Hill,” Coker said. “From that standpoint, we were very, very pleased. Dorsey was outstanding.”

“We have to do some work on our second punt unit. I’d hoped they would be efficient, but we had a couple of errors there. But, again, with our ‘ones’ I thought we were pretty efficient throughout the day. During the scrimmage we had some different situations. We ended up with overtime, so it was a good day for us as far as a learning situation goes.”

Miami will not practice on Saturday afternoon and will resume work with a 3:30 p.m. workout on Sunday afternoon at Greentree. Beginning Sunday, regular media policies (viewing for only the first 30 minutes and final 15 minutes of practice) will be in effect.

The Hurricanes begin the 2002 season Saturday, August 31, versus Florida A&M at the Orange Bowl. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
