Crudup, Payton, Weaver, Jennings Shine In Hurricanes Scrimmage

March 28, 2002

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Backup quarterback Derrick Crudup passed for 253 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense while linebacker Jarrell Weaver had nine tackles and two quarterback sacks to lead the defense in the University of Miami’s second full-scale scrimmage of 2002 Spring Practice Thursday afternoon at the Greentree Practice Field.

Thursday’s 85-play scrimmage concluded the third week of drills for Miami, which has one more week of work remaining in Spring Practice. The Miami offense accumulated 450 yards (averaging 5.3 yards per play), rushing for 122 yards (2.4 avg.) and accounting for 328 yards through the air. The Miami defense also produced its share of big plays, accumulating 12 sacks, six tackles for losses, seven pass break-ups and one interception.

“I was encouraged with several things, mainly Derrick Crudup’s confidence in the pocket, and the play of our linebackers,” said head coach Larry Coker. “The linebackers were very active. I thought Jarrell Weaver and Crudup looked the best they have since they’ve been here. Derrick’s development really showed today for the first time. He ran it when it was appropriate, but worked through his reads pretty well.”

Other defensive stars included linebacker Leon Williams (seven tackles and two quarterback sacks), starting middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma (seven tackles, two sacks) and defensive end John Square who made five tackles, including three sacks. Kelly Jennings also had a highlight performance as he played with the starting unit at cornerback, garnering three solo tackles and the scrimmage’s only interception. He also broke up two passes and had a quarterback sack on a blitz.

Tailback Jarrett Payton led all rushers with 55 yards on 11 carries, including breakaway runs of 31 and 10 yards. Fullback Quadtrine Hill rushed nine times for 37 yards, tailback Willis McGahee rushed eight times for 22 yards, and sophomore fullback Kyle Cobia led all receivers with three catches for 46 yards, including an 18-yard grab. Crudup’s three scoring passes went 61 yards to Jason Geathers, 43 yards to Andre Johnson and 16 yards to Kevin Beard. Beard had three catches for 43 yards and tight end Kellen Winslow caught three passes for 44 yards. The touchdown catches by Johnson and Geathers were their only receptions of the day in limited activity.

Incumbent starting quarterback Ken Dorsey played just two series, completing four of seven pass attempts for 57 yards, including a 20-yard hookup with Winslow.

The Hurricanes will conclude Spring Practice next week with practices on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Greentree. The spring will formally end with the annual Fox SportsNet CanesFest Spring Game at the Orange Bowl. That event will be televised live by FOX SportsNet Florida.

Fans can join the team at the Orange Bowl on Saturday, April 6, for FOX SportsNet CanesFest and get an early peek at the Hurricanes in action during their annual Spring Game. Fans who purchase season tickets that day can select seats for the upcoming season, which features home games against Florida State and Virginia Tech. In addition to the game, players and coaches will be available for autographs and fans can tour the Hurricane locker room.
