Miami Adds Pitchers Blake Morningstar and Mason Horwat

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes baseball program added a pair of pitchers via the transfer portal in Blake Morningstar from Wake Forest and Mason Horwat from Penn State, head coach JD Arteaga announced Tuesday.

Morningstar arrives in Coral Gables after three seasons at Wake Forest, where he appeared in 55 career games and made 21 starts. The Pennsylvania native earned First Team All-ACC honors in 2025 after leading the Demon Deacons with a 6-2 record and a 3.87 ERA while striking out 93 batters across 79 innings. 

The right-hander enters the program as the top-ranked pitcher in the transfer portal and the No. 5 overall transfer prospect according to 64Analytics.

As a freshman in 2024, Morningstar made 26 appearances and posted a 2-1 record while recording 38 strikeouts in 29 innings. He was one of the nation’s top prep arms coming out of Wyalusing Valley High School, earning Pennsylvania Player of the Year honors after posting a 0.80 ERA with 113 strikeouts in 61 innings.

Horwat joins the Hurricanes after three seasons at Penn State, where he made 61 career appearances and posted a 9-6 record with three saves across 145.2 innings pitched.

In 2026, Horwat made a team-best 25 appearances for the Nittany Lions, going 1-0 with a save while striking out 33 batters in 41 innings. He limited opponents to a .239 batting average and ranked among the Big Ten leaders in appearances.

A member of the All-Big Ten Freshman Team in 2024, Horwat posted a 4-1 record with two saves during his first collegiate season and led Big Ten freshmen in victories. He followed that performance with four wins and 29 strikeouts in 49 innings as a sophomore in 2025.

A Pittsburgh native, Horwat starred at Avonworth High School, where he compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.80 ERA and 61 strikeouts while helping lead the Antelopes to the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals.
