Canes Dominate Duke James Bonk Invite
CARY, N.C. – University of Miami graduate student Dan Martin took home the overall title at the overall title at the Duke James Bonk Invite in Cary, N.C., Sunday afternoon.
The one-seed in the singles “A” draw and the two-seed in the doubles “A” draw, Martin finished the tournament undefeated in both singles and doubles action, posting a 7-0 overall record. He totaled four singles wins en route to the title and, alongside doubles partner Juan Martin Jalif , tallied a 3-0 doubles mark.
In his first tournament as a Hurricane, freshman Martin Vergara Del Puerto registered a 2-2 record in the singles “A” draw, ultimately finishing in sixth place.
In the “B” draw, freshman Nacho Serra Sanchez posted a fourth-place showing, going 2-2 on the weekend. Jalif and sophomore Martin Katz tied for fifth place as each won their first-round matchup but came up short in the quarterfinals. The duo both rallied to rattle off a pair of victories to tie for fifth.
Freshman Antonio Prat also took home top honors after going undefeated in the “C” draw (3-0), capped by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Yale’s Walter Oberg in the finals.
Also competing in the “C” draw were fellow Hurricanes fifth-year senior Franco Aubone , sophomore Casper Christensen , graduate student Leonard Bierbaum and freshman Jackson Armistead . Aubone and Christensen tied for third place, while Bierbaum finished fifth overall in the bracket.
Armistead rallied from a first-round loss to make it to the consolation finals, before falling to Indiana’s Kansh Kumar, 5-7, 6-3, 8-10.
In doubles action, the “C” draw pair of Aubone and Christensen returned home with a first-place finish after rattling off three straight victories to clinch the title. The duo of Serra Sanchez and Prat finished in third, while Armistead and Bierbaum worked together to place fourth in the “C” draw.
Katz and Vergara Del Puerto closed out the doubles action for the Hurricanes with a fourth-place finish in the doubles “A” draw.
