CORAL GABLES, Fla. — University of Miami junior righthander Andrew Cabezas takes the mound Wednesday as the Hurricanes go for a series victory against the visiting FGCU Eagles at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
First pitch is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM.
The appearance marks an impromptu role for Cabezas, who has never started a midweek game in his Hurricanes career. But after a lengthy second-inning rain delay ended his last start against Bethune-Cookman on May 6, Cabezas will start as Miami looks to capture the season series vs. the Eagles.
Miami dropped a pitchers’ duel, 1-0, in the first meeting between the two teams at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla., back on March 28. The Hurricanes rebounded with an 8-1 win in the second matchup between the two teams, April 18, at The Light.
Freshman Chris McMahon started that game and allowed just one run across eight dominant innings with eight strikeouts. McMahon’s gem followed up a strong outing from freshman Daniel Federman in the first meeting, when the Pembroke Pines, Fla., native came out on the wrong end of an eight-inning gem of his own in a complete game loss.
Miami is riding a four-game winning streak into Wednesday’s game and will look to continue their momentum from a weekend sweep of Bethune-Cookman.
The Hurricanes captured back-to-back walk-off wins against the Wildcats thanks to heroics from freshman Dylan Cloonan Saturday and junior Romy Gonzalez in Sunday’s finale.
The sweep was powered by 24 runs in three games and strong performances at the plate from freshman Isaac Quinones (.462, 6-for-13), Gonzalez (.429, 6-for-14), junior Danny Reyes (.385, 5-for-13) and Cloonan (.364, 4-for-11).
After a weekend trip to Virginia Tech for a three-game ACC series with the host Hokies from May 11-13, the Hurricanes return home for four games – one against Stetson (May 15) and three against Boston College (May 17-19) – to wrap up the regular season.
