Cabezas Named ACC Pitcher of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior righthander Andrew Cabezas was recognized with ACC Pitcher of the Week honors after an outstanding performance on the hill in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Pittsburgh on April 21.
Cabezas put together the best start of his career to help Miami salvage its series with Pitt at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
The fiery righthander threw the first complete game shutout by a Miami hurler since May 14, 2015, with a gem against the Panthers. Cabezas, a native of Miami Gardens, Fla., struck out a career high-tying 11 batters, including two in the ninth, and faced just four batters over the minimum in the second complete game of his career.
ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel. This is the first weekly league honor of Cabezas’ career and fifth time this season a Hurricane has been selected; junior outfielder Danny Reyes was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 19, while sophomore righthander McKendry was also named ACC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 26 and March 12, as well as ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 26.
Cabezas and the Hurricanes return to the diamond Wednesday with a midweek matchup against visiting FIU to close out a five-game homestand. First pitch for the game, slated for broadcast on ACC Network Extra and WVUM 90.5 FM, is set for 6 p.m.
