McKendry Named ACC Pitcher of the Week
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second time in the past three weeks, sophomore righthander Evan McKendry earned conference honors for an outstanding performance on the mound.
McKendry was named ACC Pitcher of the Week Monday after twirling six shutout innings against Notre Dame to help Miami clinch its series with the Fighting Irish.
ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel. This is the second weekly league honor of McKendry’s career and the third time this season a Hurricane has been selected; junior outfielder Danny Reyes was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 19. McKendry was also named ACC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 26.
McKendry was masterful in the first game of a doubleheader on the first weekend of conference play, recording a career-best 12 strikeouts and surrendering just two hits. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native, who improved his record to 3-1 by picking up a win for the third straight start, has a team-high 38 strikeouts across his four starts this year.
McKendry lowered his ERA to 2.11 in the 9-0 victory to clinch Miami’s third series victory of the spring. He has allowed one earned run over his past three starts spanning 18.0 innings, good for a 0.50 ERA and a 3-0 record over that stretch. He has racked up 30 strikeouts over his past three starts and allowed just nine combined hits.
McKendry and the Hurricanes return to the diamond Wednesday with a midweek contest at UCF. First pitch for the game, slated for broadcast on WVUM 90.5, is set for 6:30 p.m. from John Euliano Park.
